Curious to find out how many of you need to top up oil on your LS1 5.7 and how often. Mine tends to drink a couple of litres between changes, I've heard some of them do but curious to see what the norm is.

Given that the oil viscocity is really low (something like 0/20) and the engine revs relatively low I would be surprised at any noticable oil consumption

How do you drive it? And what type of journey on average?

not a sip here either but then most of the mileage is motorway stuff heading down to the touring cars or similar. 5-6k a year and an oil change once a year so not that surprised.

How old is it, early engines were prone to use oil?

My old elise used to drink a litre every 1k miles. Engines will vary so 1-2 litre every 10k miles shouldn't be too bad but worth keeping an eye on. If it's consistent then it may be a feature of your engine. Have you had the car from new or second hand?

If you drive it hard (esp when from cold) or alot of town driving or short journeys then you'll use more and this would be considered normal consumption for the type of driving.
(although driving hard on a cold engine is not a good thing to do at all)

Nope, not a drop here either.
Got an idea, why don't all us "not a droppers" get together and refine our unspent oil into some more useable fuel....?!

Trust me to buck the trend, ls2 (vxr8) have used 2 litres in just under 10k, hopefully just bedding in, not as bad as a friends audi (8lts)...................!!

Can you imagine this tread on the Mazda RX7/RX8 forum!!
Question would be "Does your twin Wankel use oil between starting it up and setting off?"! Average is meant to be about a litre every 1k miles i heard!!

My old ls1 used to eat a bit, nothing major. It appeared to be the PCV system that took some in. A catch can helped.
They say a good hard thrashing from new helps prevent glasing the bores wink

I reckon I use a litre every 6000-8000 miles. 2004 LS1, driven quite hard.

I'm pretty sure the high consumption is down to the fact it's an 02 Monaro and I mainly drive it to and from work. It's only an 8 kilometre drive each way and it's in heavy traffic (journey takes 45 minutes each way). When it's cold I don't rev it more than 2,500 rpm. It got a nice run last weekend down to Taupo and back as my wife bought me an experience in a race setup VY around Taupo race track....Now that was fun to drive!!!

Hi Headhoon, I have a 2001 HSV and I have changed my PCV system to be the same as a LS7/2004 on LS1 and this has stopped the oil consumption issues that the car had. The guy's with F-body Camaro's in the USA have a good write up on changing the PCV system which I used, I will try and post a link if you are interested. I do a mix of very short runs and Motorway stuff.

Yeah - average speed of 10kph or 6mph with no airflow through the engine bay is gonna hit the oil.
