Ok so Hi My names Garrick and I'm addicted to Aussie cars!

I've got a question that might have been asked before but I can't see it so what the hell I'll ask it anyway.

How reliable would an HSV or a Monaro be as a daily driver? Yes I know it would be damned expensive, I'm running a Ford Falcon XR6T ute just now so have felt the pinch. I am though fed up of driving on the dark side and would love to have a Holden (my first love) mostly from the fact that I can get it fixed a bit more easily if it goes wrong (rather than the Ford, which could potentially be a pain in the ass) but also I've just always had a thing for them...... I'm also on holiday in Oz just now, and seeing them all over the place has re-whetted my appetite for a V8. There will be a good chance I'll have a small shopping trolly as well, but mainly would be driving the car as my main vehicle.

So what do you think, viable option or insane idea?

Good choise M8, these cars have some small issues which are documented here. There are many on here who run their car's as daily drives so you should not have a problem. There are a number of specilist vauxhall and independents that will look after your car. Once you have one you will not wont to go back.

Totally viable but on fuel alone I cant justify it - hence the 1.0ltr corsa to get to work and the shops, plus I would not take mine to Tesco's as Id end up thumping someone if a trolley bumped into my car!
Others run theirs all the time but have less to travel. No real issues I can think of unless you drive like a mad man or get the urge to modify it although saying that mines modified and it runs like a factory car. thumbup

Totally viable for sure. As for justification of fuel.. work help with that and life it to short to torture myself with something so crusty that suicide becomes preferred over another mile in a fiesta or similar.

My Monaro is a daily driver. I can't afford to run two cars. I wouldn't have bought it if I had to commute silly miles every day. I'm lucky that I work only a few miles from home. That hasn't stopped my racking up the miles though Love driving it too much. As a daily car, it is very comfortable and compared to what I've owned before, a little bit of luxury. The big old leather bucket seats are lovely. It's like driving a sofa down the motorway. As far as I can tell general repair/servicing costs are a lot lower than other performace cars, so it's only really the petrol that's a pain in the arse.

A car is meant to be driven, and well I have my monaro as an everyday driver, which is what I would have done back in Oz, so no different there. (supprised your Fo$d isn't in the workshop permanently, as it is a ford).. (sorry couldn't resist it, eh-rob would be proud ). The reliability of the monaro is awesome, and being a holden nothing much goes wrong with them. Honestly, they are easy to work on, and do things on, and not overly complicated. I have a V6 commodore here as well, and the only thing after 140,000km I have had to change is the alternator, and that was only because it was only one half of it was working. Will be selling it soon to make room for another holden on the driveway, and get rid of the corsa which unfortunately the Mrs drives. Have tried to get her to park it down the street, but she won't for some reason..

Mine is a daily driver, approx 20k miles in 12 months. Fuel is the only real issue (as already mentioned), no problems really with reliability, and far more preferable to a cheap second car in my opinion.

Yeah, ok, I appreciate the problem. Squirt's running at £1.12 if you're lucky and that's for 95 ron (hope it doesn't burn the motor out). Congestion charge £8.00 p/day (well at least with Boris it mayn't be £25.00 p/day come October). Would I swap the car......shit would I...... I can get close to 30mpg on the motorway, I've also got 1.1mpg on The Highway (coming from Limehouse Link Tunnel), nasty. Nevertheless, the motor works for me. It's all about bang for yer buck. If you look at how this Labour government screws you, you might as well give it the vickers and run the motor you feel comfortable with and to be fair I feel comfortable with mine

Mines a daily driver too. Occassional school run and general kid transport stuff. Fine.

I work at night (start around 10pm and finish around 4-5am) so I get to drive mostly on very empty roads - perfect for the 'Ro!!!!!! I carry equipment a lot for work too and it manages no problem.

Reliable, enjoyable and tackles pretty much any challenge with ease.

I even went and bought a petrol lawn mower with it last week and the box went straight in the back without scraping the boot liner plastics or anything (2004 CV8 has a BIG boot).

I have a 2002 Monaro and have modified it. I use the ro as every day transport and I don't give a shit about how much petrol it uses as its a great place to be when your travelling to and from work. Plus the feel and sound of that engine grunting and the full big bore exhaust pulsating and crackling away...... I digress

Daily driver here - lightly modified (catback, road response pack and ripshifter). 20,000 miles a year and just the normal well documented issues (brake discs 'warping' and clutch slow return).

Only real nuisance for me is access to the rear seats for the kids - the electric front seats are just way too slow!

Any noticeable difference in performance? Sounds good Monaro grunt with diesel running costs.

I use mine as a daily driver in winter and the bike during summer. It's supercharged and I 'enjoy' the performance wherever I can. Averages 15-17mpg. If you drive like a granny on the motoryway you can get up to 26mpg but it would never do 30. Very reliable even with the mods. Petrol is a bugger though - £74 to fill up and just over 200 miles!

My local garage is now selling Autogas for 55p/litre which seems a lot more expensive than I rememeber?

Tell me about it. I wish Wortec did some sort of "pac" to speed the seat sliding up a bit.

Actually HSV do a "pac" its called the VXR8 and it gives you open side access to the rear seats smile
Plus capacity for 285 rear tyres on stock rims, better handling and brakes stock too. Also you need to see the boot to believe it. Also slushbox trans for those with arthritis. Also bluetooth phone, dual climate, 6 stack cd mp3 etc.

use my supercharged hsv all day everyday 105k miles on the clock and feeling faster everyday

offset the cost of servicing with the fuel cost - miles cheaper than any other performance car imo

just bought a GM oil filter yesterday £5! good oil another £35! bargain more money to burn on fuel!
