I'm currently using the cigarette lighter adapter for my radar detector but I'm sick of the lead running in front of the head unit and aircon. I'm looking to hard wire the detector and mount it on the sun visor instead of windscreen. Question is where is the best place to wire it into the electrics before running it up the drivers side pillar to the detector? The car is an 02 Monaro, thanks for any help.

Try a piggyback fuse holder, like this one on the Monkfish site, look under extra circuit holder.

On a related note then - is there a simple way of making the cig lighter permanently live? I need to charge things like RC batteries and it's a pain not being able to plug in and leave the car.

If u do that make sure u buy a battery protector to prevent drain to the point u cant start the engine. Cost is only £5 to max £30 depends how fancy u want the unit. All available at Maplins. For my stuff I carry a Gel Acid Battery in the boot to charge stuff up.

Yep - the portable power packs you can get from halfords work well. also handy if you do drain the car for jump starting.

Thanks man, looks like a nice non invasive option, plus I've had to take the head unit out a couple of times and I don't think my fingers or knuckles could bear another episode

Thanks Well Fans, some handy advice on running that wire through, especially on the point that the a-pillar cover can snap off so just prising it in seems to be the way to go. Cheers
