Anyone else done this yet? Not driven the car since Sunday so had to run an errand and thought I'd take the 'Ro...
Swift gearchange from 1st to second a few miles from home and bang! The gearknob is loose in my hand and I have a stiff, VERY short shift somewhere under the leather gaiter
Anyone else had experience of this? Is it just a broken retaining pin or have I sheared something (don't know my own strength huh!?)
Will be "Fishing" on Weds so hopefully it'll all be sorted then, have to ring 'em tomorrow.

Hmmm, sounds like the shift levers snapped...Its quite long with a couple of kinks on the Rip shifters from what i've seen.
I'd imagine you (or service guys) could source a replacement lever.

If you fancy having a look yourself its fairly easy to remove the trim and shift gaiter to expose the shifter workings.

I know, already booked in for Weds 18th, but thanks.

And yes Mel, I can't sleep cos it's bugging me so much as you can see by the time on this post!

Is there an "idiots guide" for removing the surround? I knew it must come off somewhere, but when I glanced at it I couldn't see where the retaining screws are. Or are there just clips that need to be pulled? Didn't want to try pulling something that shouldn't be pulled and breaking something else!!

That happens to so many people over here with GTOs. Those things are really crappy.

In front of the gearlever is a little storage tray with a rubber mat in it. Under there is a self tapping screw remove that first.
Lift the Leather?? lid on the compartment between the seats. The one near where your waist is. Now grab the transmission console fascia near the top of the front of the leather lidded storage compartment and pull upwards. It is a bit scarey at first as you think you will be break it but be gentle but forceful with it and it will become unclipped. Try and limit the amount of force you use so you only lift it up about 1 or 2 inches. It is clipped on with 4 or 5 clips. Don't pull it up too far as you will have to reach under and disconnect the power windows and maybe the traction control plugs if they are in the middle there. The power windows will definately be there, not sure on the traction control on the Monaros. The transmission console fascia will probably stay stuck near the front under the stereo....you will need to push the tranmsmission fascia downwards so it comes out of the slots on the dash fascia. The gaiter is also clipped in. When you look at it, you will see how. This will allow you to look under the gearlever and see where the breakage is.

Phonsys instructions are here.

A beer? How do I get one of those then? I need a good woman I guess! lol
Gonna have a go at investigating the problem later... thanks for that guide on lifting the surround. I'll let you know how I get on.

ouch, this has put me right off one for now. I was considering one to compliment the next upgrades but seeing this I'm holding off.

BTW as moto has posted, getting inside the gator is very easy indeed

OK, after a tentative pulling up of the surround as directed, it would appear that the steel shaft itself has snapped! Surely there must be some sort of fault with it. I'm not THAT strong! (though mebbe I wish I was! lol)
I had hoped it might be something simple like a sheared split pin or something that i could tap out and replace, but no. I wonder if it possible just to replace the shaft itself, or would the whole unit need to be replaced
When the anglers are back I'll have to ring and enquire...

Hi Gas Man,

Just in interest which shaft broke ?? If it is the race version you will only have a single shaft out of the rip shifter, if the road version you will get a smaller shaft part of the rip and then the normal black shaft (two bolts connect the two) in the gear knob ??

Just wonder as not heard of the rip breaking, although seem to remember a single guy in the US breaking his factory one.

Cheers
Steven

Mark at Rapid is doing Quick Shifters for £299. I'm getting one fitted in a few weeks when the APs turn up.
