Sixth gear started slipping out on motorway, so drove home in 5th. Ok untill had to slow for traffic and realised couldn't get out of 5th!!
Bring on the sound track from SPEED........
called roger to ask his advice before i needed to stop...which he gave.
got to within a couple of miles of home before needed to stop. still wouldn't come out of 5th so had to call AA.
The Ro should be at monkfish now, so await the verdict tommorow.
Quite a common problem apparently......

known manufacturing problem, wonder if vaux will honor a claim even out of warranty?Bring on the sound track from SPEED........

....and pigs might fly
I'm hoping not to tempt fate on my own box but if it hsa been proven there was a manfacturing fault (as I am sure I have now read on ls1 and a few of the gto sites) that vauxhall should at least cover the cost of a new replacement box and then perhaps go halves on labour.
In your position I would now be researching the TSB's in the states on this gearbox and looking at possible legal advice on how to approach Vaux.

TSB's??
Excuse my ignorance but what are they?
and ringram the idea of an unbreakable box sounds good - need to convince the other half the Ro is worth keeping...
With the number of gearboxes that have been replaced VX should have done a recall on safety grounds mine packed up on a roundabout and I nearly crashed - luckily the big fish and Greens sorted everything out late on a Saturday as well. If there was a known manufacturing fault they must know which component....The Monaro / VXR8 thing has been a cheap and very half hearted 'halo' exercise especially if you look at the countless terrible customer care issues on practically evey front - with the exception of a few dealers....
JUst out of interest once I rested the car for about minutes or so with a bit of Arnie sized brute force I got it out of the stuck ratio and managed to use 1st to 3rd to get to Monkfish about 15 miles away.

appears its actually the selector is too short for high speed shifts on 5th/6th
not exactly the thread but exact same symptoms http://www.ls1lt1.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7380
worth compiling a list on here about anyone thats had this problem and get vaux to sort out liability. These boxes are designed to be super strong and last a long time too. How many miles have you got on yours?
Anyway it may not all be doom and gloom but the more prepared you are the better and it could help people in the future!

So how do you change gear at high speed!!!
56k miles on mine and counting. not been thrashed as most of that is motorway mileage.
Need some evidence to approach VX. if anyone has had similar issues could you post your user name below?
OI Granada noooooooooo (just to pre-empt him
)
I wish I had the thread here, I am sure I have it book marked at home. They modified the boxes at some point so its hit and miss. Your car should have had the updated ratio box as used in the 6.0vxr but you have the same ratios/box as in the earlier 5.7s. At some point these got the updated selectors (if I recall correctly). Rogers going to be your best port of contact as am sure he;s in a much better position technically
Worth popping into the corvette forums too (via ph if you currently use hsv.org) and also into the mustang area (though their boxes are probably quite different to not be relevant)

Well I am one of the lucky few who had a gearbox changed under warranty. I lost 5th and 6th due, I was told, to incorrect metal used for the selector. Original quote was about £8000 to replace gearbox, which eventually cost me nothing. IIRC I was just out of warranty at the time (by a couple of weeks) but thankfully it was all sorted.

The link to my post on gearboxes, a wealth of information on the different types, effect on performance, where to get them and swapping it out. Also other contributor's humorous comments at my expense.

Actually Granada, this is your post about your Gearbox woes - the other one was about top speed calculations.
