Hi all,

I live in Dubai, where the VXR is known as the CSV CR8 (embarrassingly: "Chevrolet Special Vehicles") .
See: http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/02/chevrolet-speci...

I got it in December and have been pretty happy with it so far.

However, I've always had a strange growl or "dust rub" from the front of the car that appears only during and after heavy cornering (especially bumpy corners). After a minute or so it subsides again. It's clearly audible but even more obvious through the vibrations coming up through the steering column. Speed doesn't seem to make much difference - it will even happen during parking maneuvers if I'm parking having driven aggressively moments before. It's as if two dusty steel components are rubbing against one another.

I've had it in the workshop 3 times, and have been able to demonstrate it to mechanics on two occasions, but they can't get it figured out. They've taken all the suspension and breaks apart but can't find any traces of rubbing. They think it may be related to tyre pressure. I doubt that. They say they haven't had any other customers with this complaint.

Has anyone had anything like this? How might I narrow down the problem?

If its a series of corners perhaps you need to look at the steering rack... they can overheat.

Yes, it tends to happen after a series of long hard bends at high speed (around 100 km/h). How could I test for this, or confirm it is the problem? I'm not much of a mechanic!

Go lock to lock several times with the car still then give her a whirl and see if you have the noise then.
Also listen for any kind of noise while you go lock to lock, should hear a background whine which will be more noticeable at full lock.

Read a thread about fitting a power steering fluid cooler for these cars as overheating of the fluid is a known issue. I would hazzard a guess that this is the problem especially as the temps you must be experiencing at this time of year (42c) ain't gonna help.

Thanks for the responses! I tried doing the full lock dance a few times when standing, and although it did whine lightly, especially when on full lock, it is very different from the noise I'm experiencing when cornering, so I don't think that's it. I did give it a run just after to be sure, but the noise didn't show.

V2RAC, you're right, it does get hot here; mid-40s are nothing unusual at this time of year. But it never reaches 50c officially, as that would result in a public holiday!

The workshop is convinced that it's a tire issue, and have agreed to exchange the front tires for a test run on Thursday. I'll post back then unless you have any more suggestions before.

Meanwhile I've had a flat rear tire caused by a big screw (grumble). They patched it, but I'm not convinced that's such a good idea on these performance tires. What do you think?

You should'nt be happy running a car of that size and power on a "patched tyre". Get a new one put on. It's the only thing between you and the road. Better to e safe than sorry
