Not too hard. The leather boot unclips in the console and the knob pulls straight up with about 200kg of effort. You can reduce it somewhat by prying the tabs out a bit with a screwdriver of similar.
Basically once the boot is unclipped from the console pull its skirt up. billet products Oz has a nice pictorial sequence which will show you as its used to put in a new shifter.
You just need a new knob! Try holmart or HSV/WPUK

lol.. yeah the birdo's been telling me that for a long time.

does the gaiter unclip quite easily or do you have to remove the plastic console/surround first?

On the VT you can unclip the gaiter. Its got a small cable tie to hold it to the knob. Not sure on the later models until the VE... which is still the same arrangement. Im pretty sure they all work in much the same way

Mr HSV makes sure that he makes his buck out of it too... I priced it up last year, and it was going to be about £200 for one. Thought buggar that, so got a Momo one, and had my old man make up a sleeve to slip over the old one, and screw into the new momo one. All up, was under £60.
