I have a std Moaneroh exhaust stored in my garage that I want to preserve i.e. don't want it to rust inside out.

What's the best way of treating it?

I'd just plug the ends with newspaper or the like and give the whole lot a liberal soaking in WD40.
Not much more you could do really unless you can keep it in a de-humidified box.

I may be wrong but i think even the standard exhaust is stainless steel although a low grade so it dose get surface rust on it but dosent rot through

I would plug both ends and wrap it all in cling film. This should be a cheap and easy way of preserving it.
Q Where are you storing it? as a loft would be an ideal place.

WD40 will evaporate off, use 3in1 spray oil and so long as the garage is dry it wont deteriorate noticably in yr life time!

Probably 430 or 304 vs 316, and the boxes do rust even so, especially at the low point seams.

Maybe stuff some silica gel bags inside each end before you seal it up.....
Perhaps not comparable, but lotus carlton std exhaust was a strange mix of very low grade magnetic stainless,
with mild steel baffle tubes which happily rusted away without any pre-warning of exterior rust.

Find somewhere inside your home warm and dry, preferably under the stairs. Just make sure the misses doesn't mind finding a new home for the dyson and christmas deccys !

Ok cheers chaps.
So it's basically low grade stainless and assume there's some mild steel somewhere inside so douse the inside with oilmist as much as poss.

Unfortunately living in a bungalow means under the stairs isn't an option.

Standing it vertically might be a good idea.
