I had a mate buy a Maplin DVM and wrongly diagnosed a duff alternator with it because it under read. Got his money back on the DVM, not sure about the alternator... Still good value at £4.99, just don't make big decisions based on what it says. I've always had Fluke meters (through work). Though pricey, the quality does shine through and they are still spot on after 10 years. The fancy 11A fuse which reduces the bang if you try to measure the short circuit current of the mains by mistake is more than £4.99...
