Has anyone removed the cats from their cars, if so does it require a remap?

I am thinking about getting them removed if I get a custom exhaust made, then just refitting them for MOT's.

There is loads of supras around and its pretty common to remove the cats to increase the boost, seems strange that not many people do it for the holden/monaro.

Why not just fit sports cats and be done with it...? Bit of cost involved but it saves you having to remove and replace the cats for the MOT. Also bear in mind that if your car is set up to run without cats then fitting them may not allow you to still pass an MOT as normal...?

Really you need to fit a full wortec system, manifolds and a SC! No problem then, power and MOT compliant. laugh

If its a later model it will have a pair of 02 sensors, one each side of the cat for each bank.
Removing the cat can cause the ECU to throw an error code is it thinks the cat is broke. A remap may be necessary to disable this code. Otherwise performance wise you may gain a bit from a remap but not much, certainly wouldn't be a necessity (unless the dual 02 sensors cause problems as described).

But a mentioned just get sports cats if you can. I've done decat pipes on previous cars, and the hassle of swapping them out everytime for MOT's even once a year was hassle I could have done without. Sports cats aren't that expensive for these with plenty of options from Oz and the US.

Thats true but I was just thinking while getting the silencers removed why not get the cats removed too as its alot cheaper than buying sport cats, but if its not going to work then sports cats looks like the only option.

Cheers for the replys

I tend to agree with Mad Max. I did the same but was far too noisy and not a really good tone either, ended up just replacing the back boxes for 250mm straight throughs. I am running dual pipes. Roger at Monkfish just fitted a set of Wortec headers with 100 cell sports cats. I now have a great V8 sound and an extra 25HP. Not remapped yet but the lads down at the Dyno day reckon there could be another 25HP on top of that to come with a remap as its now running a bit rich.

I've got a full system on mine with Cats removed. The system used to be cat back and when I ordered the headers I was given the option of straight pipes to replace the cats (which of course I did). The replacement pipes had a mount for the sensor, no retune required and no warning light. I personally think the cats contributed to the drone I used to have because since the headers and cat removal, no more drone
