Don't wish to spend mega bucks but need to release that V8* noise that must be in there somewhere.
The local emporium (not franchise, good local reputation) suggested cutting off the rear box, fitting a flange (in order to refit originals in the future), fit bespoke replacements and go from there.
Is this sensible/advisable/been done before? It's the cutting off bit that I'm not too keen on.
*standard MY05 monaro.

V8 exhaust tone is a very subjective area. What sounds good to one guy might not be anothers cup of tea. E.g some people seem to like the effect of fitting a Wortec cat-back system. I find thenm somewhat "raspy" but there again... one man's meat?
FWIW I have a 2005 ute with a twin system. I first tried cutting off the back boxes, had some flanges CNC laser cut and played about with some bends etc and welded up some straight throughs, with just the centre boxes in place. They were just far too loud and I did not want to be subject of an ASBO. Also The tone did not really reflect what I wanted to hear not V8 burbly enough.
I then bought a couple of very small 250mm x 100mm Jetex straighthrough silencers, cut the pipes and inserted them. Better from my neighbours point of view but still not quite what I wanted. I finally had some Wortec 1.7/8" headers from Monkfish and........ that, was what made all the difference. I now have a raunchy V8 tune, controllable through the throttle pedal. Mine is an auto and its well known that they suffer some drone at low speed, mine comes in at about 12-1500 RPM, however the trade off is that I now never tire of hearing the motor and have a constantly cold right ear. I was told that it sounded awesome when doing some high speed passes down the runway at Wings & Wheels recently.
Hope this helps you with your decision making.
I have the miltek the sound is more of a traditional bassy v8 than the raspy wortec. I love the sound of both but as a pointer I'm removing the rear silencer of the miltek, and having some cherry bomb type small silencers adapted so I cn swap as I need. The miltek is straight through with a big rear silencer as compared to the wortec which has smaller rear silencers and removable front silencers (which makes the job very easy to swap from quite (still loud!) to loud).
OF the two the Miltek is a more subtle sound, its there and when on the go pedal it sounds great but the wortec has a very nice bark from the off which some might find offensive (but that demo car of monkfish was so addictive hence my move to swap the rear box out for something smaller!)
Of course there is the SLP loudmouth which you can import or other stuff from Aus but if buyng in the UK its really Miltek (which I doubt you'll get now??) or Wortec... or as said above a 2nd hand miltek.

Breaker,
I think my exhaust has a wicked sound to it, and none of its Wortec
Its only a short clip but atleast you can hear the sound as my friend filmed me driving passed
A little hard to keep it going in a straight line. lol

Have you "local emporium" looked under it? It already has flanges for the rear boxes!
If you dont want to buy a Wortec system (still the best system out there IMO) then how about a second hand Miltek? Yours for £300!
I assume you have an 05 VXR, not a CV8?

sounds a bargain. Will it fit a VZ CV8?

Sadly not, its got oval tail finishers.
if that milltek includes the sports cats that originally came with the exhaust thats a good deal. almost tempted to take it myself as its the same as the one I have fitted and I'm speaking to a couple of local fabricators about making me some stainless headers - spare set of cat pipes to cut up could be handy...

Unfortunately not, I have the uprated monaro with the nostrils and the 3.5" pipe each side.Stigmundfreud said:

because cv8's are the original and best. The HSV version is a ruination with loads of halfords-type tat stuck to it to sell the last few cars. It has been scientifically proven that 9 out of 10 VXR drivers are bald, live with their mum and find their friends in public toilets
Well said Stig, couldn't agree more
