Gents and Ladies(x2)
After much deliberation and two warranty claims (gearbox/propshaft each taking at least 2months to fix)in 16 months. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that my 07 VXR is cursed and needs to be P/X. Having dealt directly with executive office in Luton it appears i will be able to wangle a good deal on a LS3 VXR8 (having been given an Auto as a replacement until Oct). What are peoples opinions on the Auto over the Manual as I do a lot of motorway but then time in London traffic. I know that a lot of Monaros have had niggles but what of the VXR8? Owners comments on ownership/problems would be most welcome..

Never tried the auto but I think I would prefer the manual anyway.
VXR8 is brilliant, a large step on from the Ro (in my opinion) especially in the handling and braking departments. Only niggle is transmission problems, Thank heavens four the three year warranty. angel
By the way owned two Ro's over a three year period and found them excellent cars with no probs except for the well chronicled intermitent instument malfunction on one of them which was never cured. Probably because I didn't make a big enough fuss about it.

Good Morning phill,

I know where you are coming from on this one, you like several of us have to consider do we keep the VXR's or move then on while there is a fair amount of warranty left on them.

If going for another V8 high torque engine I would very much consider an auto box, the new generation auto's are very good, and once you learn how to drive one they can be very rewarding.

VXR8, well it most certainly isn't a Monaro, it is a very large cruiser, I found it not so "chuckable" if that is your style of driving. If it isn't then yes a VXR8 is a nice car, and I suspect that several of us will be caught up in the trap of buying one just to realise a sensable return on the trade in value.

Good luck, and I hope that you get the deal that you are looking for.

Hi. I drove the auto and manual at Thruxton on the vxr track day and suprisingly I much preferred the auto.

Hi I tried both and have now owned a manual for over a year and 14000 miles, the engine has so much torque you that around town you are not changing gear that often, its a far more engaging drive and you don't have the auto box problems..........

IMO, if you intend getting stuck in a lot of traffic, the auto would be the way to go. Nothing more annoying than getting stuck in a big jam etc, in a manual car.

But if the majority of your driving is open road, I'd go for a manual.

Spot on. Nothing wrong with auto, each box has its merits ad purpose.

I agree, but on a vxr8 they seem to depreciate a lot quicker, the vxr8 auto box is not very strong.......

The autobox in the R8 isn't all that strong. Not a problem though unless you intend to go supercharged though.
If you have no intention of doing this then makes little difference other than your preference.

Guys,

Thanks for all the great responses, really useful. I have a demo 6.0 R8(auto) for at least the next 3 weeks so will see what i think. Needed genuine feedback though because it is always easy to be blinded by novelty in such a short time.

Roger apart from the oil cooler(if it makes that much difference)is the LS3 auto any better?

Noose, just wanted to say what an excellent "measured" and very imformative response to the OP questions, not only did you take in the auto/manual question, but have addressed why certain boxs fail.

Loved the bit about having the car lowered, I guess we have all been there at somepoint, thank God I have now grown up (ha ha ha ) and only do that now on track cars.
