So i took Rich's advice and googled it. On this occasion i chose the combustion engine. Went through all the different stages. I now know what a sump is and how pistons work. You know all thew basic stuff. Then i went on to what the exhaust system does and how a bigger exhaust or duel system helps to get spent gasses out of the car quicker than a small exhaust. I then went onto superchargers. I now know how and where they are attached to the engine(something to do with removing a piece of the original exhaust, or something) Spark plugs and how they work. HEMI engines etc. V8s, Flat 6 and so on. I think i picked up NA means Non aspirated. Gear ratios and how that works.
I was doing really well until i got to one bit. I clicked on the video and all of a sudden i felt i was having a in depth conversation with Ringram. This dude starts throwing things at me like "cam lobes" "rocker arms" "bucket tappets" "side thrusts" "valve springs" "plungers" "tip of valve stem" "pivot for end of rocker arm" and my personal favorite "hydraulic lash adjusters"
I mean come on. How on god green un am i supposed to take all of this in. Will i ever understand?headachesilly

I'm starting to think i should chose another forum i.e Yummie Mummies or something.

Useless without pic's winklaugh

Is your interest only recent? It takes years to get the depth of knowledge that some of the guys have on here.

I cut my teeth at the age of 12 when I bought my first car, the fact my old man owned a garage was very helpful. Learnt the basics on the good old mini... 5 years later when I was legally old enough to drive the car, it had literally been rebuilt.

Small steps .. smile

It's simply a valve (inlet or exhaust) that looks like a penny on a stick being pushed open in a downwards motion by one end of a lever aka the rocker arm. The other end of the arm is pushed upwards by the push rod (a rod appx 5-6" long) which in turn is raised and lowered by an elliptical lobe on the camshaft which rotates as it's chain driven from the rotating crankshaft. So, upwards motion of the cam lobe equates to downwards movement of the valve.

Look here:

In the first picture the camshafts are above the pistons ie overhead camshafts.

The monaro is like this:

and an overhead camshaft operating a valve.

My interest is far from recent. I never had doll as a child always cars. I talked my dad into taking me to a motor show when i was 12. I learnt to change the oil and filter in my mini at 15 before i learnt to drive it. I remember starting the engine to test I'd fitted it correctly and my ex boyfriend waving his arms at me from the kitchen telling me to turn it off. Turns out I'd left the old filter seal on the car and all the new oil was pumping out onto the road. We didn't have much money then either and I'd added some STP (i think it was called) so i was gutted at loosing it all.We put down loads of saw dust but the mark stayed there for years. You live and learn. My mini was a 1000 but the OH at the time had a 1275 cooper S. The proper one with the two fuel caps. He then had a "road hog" fiberglass front put on itpaperbag We went to mini owners club events all the time. I remember the constant smell of petrol and oil(because we were always messing with it). My face seemed to be constantly squashed up against the side windows because he used to "Lombard it" around corners.
Those were the days. £10 worth of fuel used to last forever. Then we saved up and had a cherry bomb. WOO WOO. We had to avoid roads with speed humps.
I've always had this deep passion inside. I don't know why. When i say i get goosebumps i mean i really get goosebumps. My heart races. I absolutely love it. I would rather spend £5000 on the car than on clothes, holidays, jewellery or anything. Col will spend a day sunbathing in the garden while i carefully detail the car. Latex gloves and brasso inside the exhausts.
I suppose I'm a bit of a weirdo really.
