Hitting the rev limiter
Discussion
ECU cuts fuel so it will bounce of the limiter. Kind of horrible really.
No harm should be had unless it gets lean misfire for an extended period, so dont lean on the limiter while driving the motorway in 2nd gear for example.
Some people raise the limit to 6800 or similar, though you normally want better rod bolts before doing this as they are the first things to go by all accounts.

my rev limiter is higher than that i am sure. or maybe ive only got to 6500rpm?
I'm guessing this is not the answer you were looking for but my first thought was, Red light flashes and it beeps like mad. Not very technical but that's what happens to mine. I did that today actually. It was the first time my mom had ever been in the Ro. The poor woman nearly sh1t herself

Well, looks like the responses are like buses.... nothing for 30 mins, then 3 come along all at once
Funny you should say that Bo55, so I take it the car does not shut down and go into safe mode then!Mmmmm looks like a have a few gremlins, hey how about this one, I put the ro to bed the other night, locked her up, did the double push on the fob to set the alarm, everything flashed as normal and left her.
In the morning the car was unlocked, the alarm light was flashing as was the brake light and the seat belt light, got into the car, switched on and yes the car fired up and all the lights went out...............spooky or what!!!!

Dont tell me things like that. I'm in the house on my own tonight.

Isn't it pathetic that they resort to putting this sort of thing on a performance car? It's distracting an' all. It's up there with that stupid seat belt bing.
The first time it made me jump and the seat belt thing is a pain in the arse. However i have been known not to belt up in the past. I know its pathetic but i suppose i thought i was bullet proof. I cant leave it off with the ro which can only be a great thing.

It's funny but mine (04 CV8) doesn't do either of those things. No red light. No beep. Just dies.

Rev limiter action wont see limp home mode unless you were in a low gear and engine inertia took you way over cut speed.
Trust me I Know
Mmmmmmm now I can relate to this "engine inertia" apart from Jez have others noticed that when the engine is under load and you go to change gear, or engage the clutch the engine gains revs not drops, first off I was ready to blame the re-chip, but I guess this must be a problem due to the very heavy flywheel.Trust me I Know

Thanks Jez, I will sleep well tonight
Depends on the limiter...
Soft limiter generally reduce the injector fuel cycle to limit engine.
Modern cars with fly-by-wire throttle control can also reduce the throttle load to prevent lean conditions.
Hard limiters cut the fuel completely.
Limiters reducing the spark are generally phased out now as all road cars are fitted with catalytic converters. These systems causes a load of unburnt fuel to be expelled into the exhaust where the cat is hot enough to ignite it and this dramatically increases the temp of the cat. Good option is that it simply damages the cat reducing its lifespan... bad option is the cat causes the car to catch fire (not unheard of).
Cat ignition is why all cars are quite aggressive in defaulting to "limp home mode" if a misfire is detected.
The revs increasing after clutch disengagement is usually either
- not taking foot off the accelerator enough before pressing the clutch
- multi-mass flywheel.
