LPG - YAY or NAY?
Discussion
Guys, Gals and others ...
I'm currently in the process of speaking to Monkfish regards to the performance pac, Ripshifter and scan gauges, I've had the car 2 weeks and I need to fettle it already. That's the petrol head in me.
Thanks to feedback from you guys in relation to my concerns over drone from the wortec, vibration from the ripshifter I'm now nigh on sure that I'll mod with Monkfish. (that should be his sig on the forum, hehe)
I'm looking into LPG too, I'm a self employed computer test analyst and travel from contract to contract. I've worked all over the UK and tend to commute daily or weekly, depending on where I am.
I've looked into LPG and have been given a good quite by a company 5 minutes from my house..
£2.050 + VAT for the "BRC Multi Point Sequential System"
The company site is ...www.agpl.co.uk/home.htm
Schpeel ....
-Top quality BRC Multipoint sequential system approved by the top 20 insurance company’s
- 2 year warranty for all parts of the LPG system
- Free technical support for 12 months
- Free 1000 mile vehicle check-up and tune-up
- LPGA conversion Certificate
- UK Map of LPG stations
- Membership in our LPG members club, with access to a nationwide service network.
- Maintenance and service book
- Spare wheel bag
- Emergency tyre repair kit (if required)
- Full tank of LPG
- *Courtesy car (selected installers, subject to availability and insurance)
I do roughly 30,000 miles a year so I would warrant the conversion, I'm not just being a super tight bugger. I do drive very sensibly and I often see 30mpg on the trip computer on the A1 (68mph in cruise!)
now who's for and who's against LPG. Monkfish, do you have a dislike for LPG with modified cars. I'd have the LPG carried out before I brought it to yourselves for 'fettling' if I was to go ahead with the LPG conversion.
Do we have many horror stories with LPG?
Cheers

Essex,
I never once said I wanted to put less miles on the Ro, I bought a big V8 so that I could drive in comfort, with very lazy power and simply grumble around everywhere.
I don't see why my liking of the legal speed limit means I need to buy a Mundano (Vectra). I find grumbling along at the legal speed limit is more than good enough for moi, rather than doing 18omph.
However, seeing as I don't shit gold, pee diamonds and make money from breathing I thought saving a few pennies here and there is always a good thing. I'm not a skin flint, nor looking to run the car on thin air either. I simply thought that if I can cut my fuel bill by £X pounds each month without any risk to the block/ECU etc then why not?
It's not like I'm suggesting putting a 1.4 diesel in there. It'll still be a V8, it'll still have loads of grunt. It's not sacrilege, simply clever thinking.
So I can assume that your opinion is that you wouldn't go for LPG, based on the fact that erm .... ? ... did you have a basis for your dislike or is it just personal opinion?
It'll still give me the V8 'thunder', it'll still drive like a Monaro, look like a Monaro and be A MONARO. Yet cost me less. I don't see the big negative?
"why buy a big V8 if you want to save on fuel" - Why can't I have the best of both worlds? A V8 that gets the equivalent of 50mpg?

No offence taken at all fella, I was just curios as to why you disliked it, it's all personal opinion and preference. I want as many people to comment as possible. I also want to hear stories like "LPG killed Elvis" or "LPG made my eyes bleed".
V8 (American muscle car friends up 'Norf) owners up here are 50/50 split. However some do have horror stories, but I've not heard of a VXR or Monaro dying on LPG. I have heard of standard ones dying with internal meltdown. So I can't see a high risk factor, if you know what I mean.
I think if I do start doing a lot of WOT driving I'll simply turn off the super pikey much cheapness happy gas and run on good old Earth killing petrol.
On a good day when I want to be gentle my driving saves the planet, then on a sunday I can flick a switch, gun it and make sure my speed runs kill animals and trees.
GET IN!

Well I have a massive double door style American fridge/freezer which is full of beers, vodka, white wine, pasta, veg and frozen meat, then I have a smaller fridge with an ice compartment. Which currently houses all milk and my Ben a Jerries ice cream collection. So yes, I do run to the fridge.
LPG, any opinions? heh heh

Nah nothing on LPG mate. I'm only good with icecream.
Nice fridge contents by the way

Had a similar product installed by Greenfuel into the Ro (CV8) back in January. I do at least 25k miles a year and so far, it's run pretty well. The only downer is the tank size. I didn't want to lose any of the little space I have in the boot, so trashed the spare tyre and got one of those donut tanks in the recess. Max size tank for the CV8 in the wheel recess is 60 Litres (max fill capacity is 48 Litres). This equates to about 210 miles. Fill cost is around £25. Doing 300 miles per week. Was costing me about £150 per week before. On gas, costs about £80 per week.
The other point is needing to plan routes around LPG forecourts. In the south west, you can get a Countrywide Farmer account and with a key and pin, fill up 24/7 at any of their pumps cheaper than forecourt prices.

Nice, glad to hear of another Ro owner that's had it done and thinks it's a benefit. I'd have to go for a 'ring' tank. The gent stated roughly the same numbers to me in an email, appears that he was spot on with his predictions. I live overlooking Newcastle and can see (below me) 2 petrol stations that do 'gas' so it's looking like my first mod is going to be a logical one and not a smile inducing one.
Bath, do you notice a performance drop on LPG. I know you lose a little BHP and LBS foot on it

I could be really wrong here, but dont cars respond slower on LPG?

LPG has a higher octane but lower energy content, it would be better to go 100% LPG and tune accordingly then you can raise compression to say 12:1 and overcome the power loss due to the lower energy content. Dual fuel is always a compromise in which case you will be a bit down on power.
However I guess you could upgrade the engine if you wanted. Depends on what you want.
I don't like the loss of spare wheel and messy under bonnet plus increased complexity. But for high miles I see the benefit. What it boils down to is that the only advantage it has is lower tax rate. If the taxation was equal then there would be no point.
Who is to say the EU emissions trading wont say they have to be taxed the same by law?

Having been procrastinating over LPG for a while now. I've also got a 56 plate VXR and would be very interested in hearing your experiences if you go through with things. I do between 12k and 15k a year but plan on keeping the car a while, especially given what a knock the 2nd hand car market has taken.
Do you know if a bigger spare wheel tank could be fitted by raising the boot floor a bit, two or three inches perhaps, possible to go for 80 litres? What about the positioning of the fugly filler cap, I wouldn't want someone taking a hole-saw to the metal of the bodywork! Is it possible for the filler to be hidden or at least on the plastic bumper?

Will they let you open the boot to fill? Or is that bad maybe due to filling the boot with liquid gas by accident?
On that topic it stays liquid for quite a while. I emptied a tank out and filled some plastic cups with it a few years back... prior to disposing of it in a arsonist-ic manner.

I had a 2.0 l omega converted about 7 years ago, it ran ok for 3 years and then something major went like rings or valve seat because it burned all of the oil in one 30 mile journey.I don't think it was the lpg but I did run it virtually all of the time on gas. Only the first start in the morning was made on petrol which will probably be the case for you as well if you go ahead. Apparently the system needs some warmth for it to operate correctly. If I did it again I would start the engine every time on petrol to let in some lubricant to avoid any possible problem along these lines, unfortunately you will be amazed at how much petrol you use just starting up and driving 50 yards.
I had a 45 litre tank, but you can't get 45L in. You have to knock off about 10% to allow for expansion, you will also get less in in the summer (35L) and the power of the pump also makes a difference to how much you squeeze in to the tank.
Going for a doughnut tank will probably limit you too much regarding the size that you can get in the spare wheel slot, I got 29mpg on a run im the Omega doing 70mph on a motorway in a Ro you will probably only get 24 if you are really careful. Therefore realistically out of a 45L tank you will only get a max of 210 miles and probably a bit less.
Your best bet is to go for a cylinder tank up to 100L this will give you decent range, but will use up a lot of boot. Do you have a big boot or small boot? I had a boot rack for my Omega which we used for family holidays to carry the spare wheel whilst the boot was filled to capacity with the usual rubbish that you take on holiday, most of which you don't use anyway.
To sum up:
go for it,
put in a really large tank,
start on petrol every time
get a boot rack to carry extra luggage (one from an MG will be fine)
Enjoy cheap motoring in a V8!!!!
GOOD LUCK

I had mine converted about 3 months ago, 80 litre tank in the boot, get about 20-22 mpg (was getting 24-25 on petrol (lots of motorways)), done about 5-6k miles.
On the dyno it's making about 8bhp less on gas than petrol up to about 5000 rpm. then it tails off a little more.
I reckon it will pay for itself in 12 months, more importantly I'm no longer tempted to change the Ro for something sensible.
