Ok probably a stupid question but i'm gonna ask it anyway. Col and i were discussing the mods I've chosen and i was asked "what does a cat back exhaust do"
Ok i know it helps airflow and sounds better but what does "cat back" actually do and how is it an improvement on my standard exhaust. Co wasn't to impressed when i said "its a bit bigger and shinier". I told him I'd ask. Does it mean there's a catalytic converter at the backsilly I need to give him facts

It means the exhaust is replaced from the catalysts (about where the drivers door is) backwards towards the rear of the car. It's more free flowing than standard which helps the engine breathe and liberates about 20hp.

20hp?

From an exhaust??? Like those "turbos" on ebay that add 20hp? I just put my exhaust on for the noise

Maybe if combined with ecu tuning .

Good effort, I was too tight to go for the tune, just got the wortec pipes on their own. What a noise! I can't believe these cars are so mute at birth.

I have a cat-back exhaust on mine Bonnie...and thats exactly what it allows you to do...at times of MOT, say, you put the 'cats back' in for the emissions bit! Wonderful without, muted when fitted! The fishy boys do my MOT too! Well, not MY MOT, the cars!!

This is incorrect. A cat-back system starts _after_ the cats and doesn't have anything to do with removing them. Maybe you are confusing the cats with the silencers.

OK Magic, I stand corrected...so the two cats I have in my garage, that have been replaced by two straight pipes on the car, are not what is known as a cat-back system then? Funny, thought it would be logical to call it so - so you can 'put the cats back'! Learn something every day on here!! Thanks for that Magic, I had it totally wrong. Sorry for the misguidance Bonnie!

If your cats are off you have by pass pipes fitted. nowt to do with cat back. literally means from the catalysts backwards.

We'll be up in Wales within the times your home so we'll defo meet up at the New Inn for a few beers. Haven't eaten there yet as Col likes my cooking a bit too muchmad but i drove past there the other day to see where it was. Carried on up the hill. What a hill. I was a bit concerned about pressing the loud peddle in case i tipped backwardsyikes Lovely area though

bonnie as said on the text I'd question the cat back unless you want noise. They work great as a step towards a fuller flowing system that would include high flow cats and headers

Yee gods, what a lot of confusion for a simple question!

Cat-back, as stated means from the catalyst backwards, if the pipes are larger diameter than standard (which they almost certainly will be) you'll gain noise and power, although how much power will vary.

I suspect that the so called cats that Paul.H has sitting on the garage floor are in fact the front silencers, as the cats on the Ro are quite far forward and less easy to swap. (could be wrong though!).. It is possible to bypass the cats, but then you start running into mot problems on the emissions check..

The reason most people go cat-back is cost, as replacement cats are quite expensive, however hi-flow cats will liberate more power, combine them with headers for the full effect. Expensive, but nice!

I apologise for any confusion caused by my (ill-informed) comment - the reason I said what I did was because the 'things' sat in my garage ARE catalytic converters - 2 of them - and not silencers. The fishy guys fit them for MOT purposes then remove them after & fit the straight pipes back in! The car is fitted with DeFilippo 'long tube' headers which reach from the heads to the cats. This is why I thought the way I did...the exhaust system fitted to my car was already on it when I bought it back in '06 from Booster (Brian Steene). It does sound rather good though!!

Again, sorry for any misleading info Bonnie!
