VXR8 Modification (free)
Discussion
As I have mentioned in a few other threads, (oh no, not again I hear) I have never been happy with the amount of transmission noise transmitted into the cabin, especially when working things a touch hard. My previous Monaro was like a Rolls Royce comparatively.
Well here's the answer:- First remove the cover that holds the window/mirror switches by gently prising up from just in front of the centre armrest and working forward as far as the t/c control switch. There are three multi-plugs to remove then the cover becomes free. Unscrew the four screws that secure the outer gearlever gaiter in place and roll it up the lever out of the way. The inner rubber gaiter is now visible for inspection for any splits etc. Mine had a large split which I suspect had been evident since day one. So shove it all back together and off to the Stealer to get a replacement. After a short wait of two months for it to arrive car was booked in to have it fitted. Picked car up drove away and made another appointment to have it fitted, this time hopefully, correctly.
Still not happy about the noise albeit a great improvement, so it was off with the cover, up with the outer gaiter and Eureka the idea was born. Some old thick carpet underlay was fished out of the loft and deftly cut and laid all around the lower lever assembly in about three layers virtually filling the cavity. Back together it all went and out on the road we went and bu**er me it was a totally diferent car. The engine can now be heard. Time taken twenty minutes, cost zilch, just call me RapidV2RACFish.
Gearbox ain't faulty it was replaced under warranty, original was just as bad. Just had a thought, wonder if this was how the rubber gaiter got split!!!!!
