Probably. When we have tubbed Jez's, maybe get pretty close to that but on the inside?
Sorry but what do you mean by tubbed. Oh thinking about it do you mean the width of the tyres? just on the inside rather than widening the body and going outwards
Tubbing a car means cutting out the inner wheel arches and remaking them so wider wheels and tyres can fit with the extra width inwards rather that outwards and not rub.
Going in to gain width is hard work if you ask me! Ive got about 5mm clearence on the inside running to the chassis rails and I only have 10" rims at the moment. Dont even mention the outside clearence as its not really measureable!
There will be some serious cutting and shutting to go wide inwards, plus the offset looks crap with no shiney rimmage to polish...

What's involved, is it tricky and will it cause rot?
Is it tricky? - well fairly.
Will it cause rot? No, not the way it will be sealed up afterwards.
Are me talking of gains up to the spring platforms or a major revision of the rear suspension design?

No, just upto the spring platform. Though that said, there is scope to move the spring platform inboard by the best part of an inch going from memory up to the main chassis rail, which is hardly a major revision. Or use smaller diameter springs and reduce the platform size accordingly. Both more work, but again, i think, doable (is that a word?)

Going in has the advantage that no exterior paintwork is required, so cost wise i doubt it will be more. Plus it still looks stock.
