I'm due an MOT, and looking for a local garage who isn't going to 'make up problems' in hope of making some extra money from the work. Ascot/ Maidenhead/ bracknell/ bagshot/ windsor locality. Any suggestions?
Cheers!

This is a major problem to look out for these days!

My firm has been regularly using a local garage for service and MOT's.

After getting problems to fix on just about every vehicle that went through a test, I decided to use another local garage, which predominantly only did MOT's, to test a van which we were told (by our regular garage) would need about £300 spending on it to get it through.

Surprise, surpise when it passed with no faults at all. My advice is; If in doubt, or unless it's an obvious fault, get a second opinion, or get them to actually point out where the problem is. E.g. if they say you have a leaky shock absorber, have a look to make sure it is.

The worst possible thing to do is to just leave the vehicle with the garage. Try and be present and in the vehicle yourself, they are less likely to have your trousers down.

Very good advice, I hate it when anyone stays to watch while I test a car as you never know who they may be. I don't quite get the "making faults up thing" personally as I find it more hassle to fail a car than pass it.

Interesting thought - how do/can they test the handbrake on the Monaro? Apart from the fact that my dashboard goes berserk if you pull the hamdbrake lever whilst in motion, doesn't it have some kind of lock arrangement, which could be damaged on the rollers?

This is the problem with cars with non run of the mill brakes etc, you need to tell the examiner about your concerns before the test. Whenever I get anything out of the ordinary I always ask if there's anything I should know that's different to other cars.

I've used Apple in Slough. Part of the coach firm. They just do MoTs and don't work on cars. While you wait too.

Top Test in swift lane bagshot (next to the dump just off J3 M3) don't let looks fool you with the dump and pikey farm next door. Jimmy is extremely fair and thorough but if he fails a car i would take notice that it is something that really needs attention rather than just a sat nav left on the windscreen or something made up.

Have had both the corvette and camaro done there with total confidence and the viper will be when its due. He wont get all upset and grumpy if he has to ask you about how something works on a car he doesn't see very often, unlike other places that seem to get stroppy when you watch or have to show them how to display the mileage or something and then seem to go out of their way to find something to fail it on. Its funny how both times i have had failed MOT's elsewhere i could tell from the attitude of the tester it would be a failure before they had hardly started the test.

Top Test 01276 479997

As for the ro on brake rollers i wouldn't have thought you would want to do that if it has a limited slip diff.

Thanks guys, i'll try top test first to see when they can do it, and if they are busy i'll try apple. Not sure it can be that good on the lsd to pull the handbrake on at speed... would make a pretty big CLUNK too.
Cheers, kf
