An interesting thing happened on the way to the insurance...
Discussion
... don't get me wrong, this isn't a complaint, as such.
I'm a great believer in using insurance brokers, after all they check far more possible policies that I can! It's just I tend to forget that they need a prod from time to time.
My Monaro is insured via a brokerage that advertises on this forum. Last year the premium was £720 which I thought was high but nothing like other quotes I'd had. This year the renewal cane in at £830.
If it hadn't been such a jump I'd have let it go, but £100 is £100! So I looked around for a couple of new quotes and got one at £640ish. Seemed a good bet to me, so I called my current broker to let them know I wouldn't be renewing, after all the best they could do was £830 after their exhaustive search on my behalf!.
You guessed it, after about 60 seconds thinking about it they 'found' cover for me matching the quote I had.
The moral of the story? Even when using a broker you STILL have to run around like an idiot getting various quotes to get a good deal. Surely there's a business here? I'd pay someone to do all this running around for me. Collecting quotes and finding me the best available! Someone to 'broker' the deal maybe?
Hmm that gives me an idea.....

im a young chap ( well as far as insurance goes) and i phoned a broker in November before i brought a monaro to get an idea of insurance prices and they quoted me £700 of which i was happy with and said i would swap insurers if / when i bought one.
as you can guess i brought one and have not even had it a week yet. and phoned up the broker again to take out insurance with them and got them to re quote me at £1500. after much talking and discussing they said its the best they can offer me and the reason for the "such a low quote" was due to insurance prices changing etc. but he could still not supply me with a good enough reason for such an increase. so i have stayed with my current insurer(who are performance car specialists) as they are cheaper.....
work that out!!!!!

Open & Direct insured my Monaro when I lived over there
Hi, Just thought i would introduce myself, recently bought an 06 plate 6 litre vxr monaro. i cant belive how much you guys are paying for insurance it cost me £560 to insure mine fully comp with protected no claims for me 'n her with no silly conditions didnt even ask for a tracker. So if you are interested the broker is Robert Spray ins Tel number 0115 9564888 and ask for craig spray if he isnt there ask for a call back. obviously everyone has different driving history but no harm in asking

My premium is £605 for cover including personal business use plus full UK / European breakdown / recovery cover. That's with only 1 years NCB after I killed my Trans Am. The policy is with More Than, we called them directly and arranged it over the phone (Mr B works for RSA).

Im with Admiral as well have been since 2005(always been cheapest for me but car is standard), heres a tip dont just accept the renewal but redo a quote afresh on the web site It came out £120 cheaper even after increasing my cover

That's funny Eileen, because all my business vehicles are insured with RSA too, and do you know what, I couldn't even get a quote from them - let alone cover???Edited by eileenb on Tuesday 6th January 17:08

Interesting. Mr B phoned up, quoted registration. They said "that's a Vauxhall Monaro .... (etc) - and the premium is .... ".
(He gets RSA staff discount but I don't suppose they make special arrangements for this type of car just for staff).
Well mine is an HSV, but they were told its the same spec as a Vauxhall Monaro (well near enough). I think it could be something to do with your family connections actually.(He gets RSA staff discount but I don't suppose they make special arrangements for this type of car just for staff).
As is the case with most of the big (non specialist) insurers, if it's on their list (UK spec cars etc) they can provide a quote.
I certainly had to shop around insuring my old 2000 Trans Am for business use (and the Camaro before that). I ended up using a broker specialising in US cars.
I guess a standard 2006 Vauxhall Monaro is mainstream enough for the big guns to be able to quote.

You're right of course. It's just so infuriating when you really need to rationalise, as a valued (or not as is the case) customer, you would have though they would at least have tried to offer me a service. The funny thing is that I had a cold call from <More Than> just 2 days ago touting for business???
