I've just bought a very low mileage 6 litre (LS2) VXR Monaro and have a couple of quick questions.

1. I have been reading the handbook and it says check the oil every 300miles??? That's seems to be a bit over the top or do they use more oil than normal type car (I would have thought a low revving engine such as the V8 is, that at cruising speeds would use less)??? I don't think I've had a car where any of the handbooks recommend checking engine oil that regular... O and another bit to the oil question. On the oil filler cap it says use Mobil 1, but in the handbook it says use GM oil grade 5 - 30. I cant see that GM oil is as good as Mobil 1, so what needs to be used???

2. The other quick question is on the cooling system; There appears to be an expansion tank at the front near side of the engine bay, when the cap is removed there is a dip stick, where should the level be on the dip stick?? Again the handbook doesn't show this type of expansion tank.

Any advise welcome, I don't want to be chuffing up my Monaro now!!!

I don't have aMonaro but I do have an LS2.

1. I check mine every week and use Mobil One.

2. Between the two holes. Not the best of devices I must say, but it works.

I'd say check it at least once a month, maybe 6 weeks. I do about 10,000m a year.

They do actually consume oil, unlike many cars I've owned. Read the how long is the dipstick post on here...

Mine gets Royal Purple at Monkfish. Mobil 1 is also popular.

1. they dont really use a significant amount of oil. Just VX covering thenselves as manufactureres do. Only the filler caps on VXR's (HSV's) state mobil 1. 5/30 or 10/30 is fine, though as normal a fully synthetic is always a better choice in the long run.

2. the expansion bottle arrangement on the 05 cars was a big leap backwards in my opinion. seems an odd thing to do. but to answer your question, anywhere between the two triangle (arrow?) holes on the dipstick. the handbook shows the earlier style expansion tank.

Thanks J.J. I done about 600 miles in it last weekend after picking it up Friday and every inch was a pleasure, just waiting to get my private plate on it and will be looking forward to the next little (big) adventure in it... biggrin

Sounds like a deal!

First problem ive came across is the vibration from the front end under heavy braking, appears the brake pads cause the problem not the discs as I thought, few people seem to have had the issue.

O dear, this is starting to sound scary with the "snap" thing. I thought I felt the same with mine on Sunday (I put it down to disks too). However, mine has only done 16,000 miles (don't know the mileage of yours?) so I thought it was me trying to find fault as I had only had it 2 days at that point. Nevertheless, for a GM built car the Monaro does appear on the face of it very well built and in comparison to the Lexus's that I had over the last 7 years this so far, beats them hands down on a number of things...

Mines got just under 9k miles on which is why I thought warped discs straight away as it will have spent most of its life standing around. Try braking quite hard from a higher speed, obviously not more than 70mph as mine does it quite bad the harder I brake.

I think we might need to invest in some new pads between us then... Mind i was suprised to look in the service history on year 3 and it says front pads worn by 50% at 14K, i think the wifes Merc is still the originals at 70K!!!! (and i give that a hammering when i take that out wink )

If your both still under warranty get yourselves to a decent dealer. It sound as though your are warped. Ours were, some dealers wont touch you but Slaters at Colwyn Bay North Wales did ours Free of charge. Don't take no for an answer.

Sorry to disagree with you Mel, but if the problem only occurs during heavy braking, and the brakes feel normal with light to normal braking, the discs cannot be warped - if they were the problem would be evident under all conditions. The problem is soft pads leaving deposits on the discs. Agree though, with the idea of trying to get them replaced under warranty if you can find a sympathetic VX dealer. I went to 2, Greens and Motorbodies, who both at first said it was warped discs and that they would replace them, but after they contacted VX for approval, VX did not approve saying it is normal 'wear and tear' and wanted £1500 plus to replace them. As I said in another thread, Roger of the 'fish also says its the pads, and fitting the harder compound 'performance' pads he recommends fixes the problem.
