Steering wheel vibration at 60 mph
Discussion
different cause to the other thread.
Been getting wheel wobble at 60-70 mph progressively getting worse.
First thought it was material transfer on the pads so tried the clean up cycle, and problem still exists, even does it without braking now, so I know that is not the issue.
Took it to a tyre place today to get the wheels balanced, they took one look at the bridgestones and showed me the inside edges which were BALD - whilst about 3-4mm on rest of tyre. Both are the same and they car has had its tracking done.
Weird thing is that there is still tread past the shoulder ie towards the rim, so just a big bald strip on the inside edge - this would indicate (to me) good side wall strength as the tyre is not deforming under load, but having had the tracking done, i would have thought the tyre wear would have been a lot more even????
Never been tracked or driven particularly hard for long as 95% motorway miles.
The tyres have done 20k
Any thoughts guys n gals?

I had this issue with my old CV8 with Goodyear's on the front. Really felt uncomfortable and it turned out to be the inside sidewalls wearing away. Eventually let go at around 70 on a duel carriageway....happily managed to keep it under control though.
I thought it was just down to Goodyear making tyres that don't suit the 'ro....but it could be something else.

I had the same problem in December but with the rear tyres wearing away the inside shoulder down to the cords...I had a blow-out on the left rear but fortunately it was only at 25-30mph - the right one wasn't far away from blowing too! Booked the car into the 'fish so will see what Roger has to say about it!
It's as though the rear suspension set-up/tracking isn't what it should be!

Have you had it tracked, or 4 wheel aligned? Mine had exactly the same wear pattern when I got it and was a mile out when I had it 4 wheel aligned.
Yes had it 4 wheel aligned shortly after the tyres were fitted. It's consistant on both sides, and other than that drives straight and true well below and above the critical speed.
Too much camber maybe?
In for a service next week so will see what the garage says...
TYRE THREAD TIME!
Without seeing pics, it sounds like too much camber coupled with over inflation.
Normal over inflation gives you a bald middle stripe but through in incorrect camber then it just shifts the problem to the inside slightly but leaves plenty of tread on the outside.
Do you have any different after market springs/lowered?
duff tracking will just increase overall wear.

will try and get a pic done later
car is on stock springs and I have the print out for the 4 wheel alignment that was done. Will check the pressures in a bit aswell.

Wow! How do you get 20K out of tyres and still have 3-4mm in bits? Even taking your statement about 95% motorway miles into account, mine chomps a set of tyres every 8K, regular as clockwork! Rotate them front to back at 4,000 miles and by 8,000 its time for a full set all round, all evenly worn down with no variation! We need to get some motorways in Orkney I think! The tyres have done 20K

No twisty turnies on the M'way so 95% miles are in the straight ahead position (more or less) therefore no scrubbing of the whole tyre as you would on twisty roads...
Can't rotate as got 255's on the back - 245 is the max on the front, but I have oem Bridgestones 235/40/18's
and...

Are you sure you have clearance between the tyre and the strut? Just had a similar issue, looks like the tyre might have rubbed through against the strut (tyre changing shape - perhaps cord damange - my tracking was still perfect when checked.
235's should have LOADS of clearance, but will check this tommorow along with tyre pressures.
Ummmm, the middle pic shows the wear on the outside of the tyre (you can see the wheel), but the other pics appear to show it on the inside...? Can you confirm which position on the car each tyre is on in each of the pics.
Also, inner tyre wear only with correct tracking is usually down to inner suspension bush wear/play. Could also be top mount related, they take a beating on the front of any big heavy car (like my Volvo V70R) given the state of UK roads these days. If the tracking is correct then basically it's a case of too much camber angle, the question is what's the cause of that. I have that on my V70R at present and it's because I tried to be a cheapskate and fitted QH lower a-arms to it back in early July, and already by the MOT in December they had excessive wear and movement. 2 trashed Dunlops same as yours and another 250 for Volvo arm kits from the dealer which I still have to fit (need a nice day for that).

You need to sort out your alignment settings.
What he said!
Take it to the 'fish and consider their Pedders bush kit and alignment. Although that said Rog, you lost out on my Pedders order for my HQ... Emailed asking for progress a couple of times and no reply, so the nice chaps at King Springs airmailed me some springs for a very good price (5 days door to door!) and LK Performance in sunny Yorkshire got me a full set of Konis also for a good price via the distributer in Holland. I guess you guys are too busy with all these modern fandangled Monaros huh...

My cv8 has 15,000 miles on the clock and the front tyres have worn in a similar way to yours. The tyres are the original ones. I had a bad vibration at all speeds and had the tracking checked which was in order, I also had the wheels balanced twice but the problem was there. Last week I rotated the wheels around the rear tyres were replaced last year and are as new. When I drove the car it was a smooth as silk, not even a vibration from the rear. I look after my tyres checking the pressuuers and going out of my way so as not to kerb them. I think the problem we have is the way the cars are set up at the factory, and forget taking it back to Vauxhall they cant fix them. The only solution I think is to get the car down to Monkfish and get a Road response pack fitted. Mine is booked in for next week, I will let you know how I get on if you cant fix it in the mean time...
