Resonator / H-pipe
Discussion
This will have been covered before but...
can someone tell me the purpose of the resonator on the 05 Monaro?
I have seen pictures of the inside but wonder how it works and how the car will sound and perform without one.
I would like to add an H-pipe in its place for that low rumble sound as opposed to an X-pipe which I understand sounds a bit different.
The reason I ask is to make the car sound a little better until funds allow a proper system to be fitted.
I hope it will not drone or need a remap...? the rest of the system will be standard.
Thanks all.............

Well my understanding is limited as usual. But as far as I recall the siting of the first muffler is intended to appear to the exhaust as open air. (ie) An area of lower pressure, thereby terminating the exhaust pulsing from the upstream exhaust. However these days the cats can perform this function.
See here under "pressure waves" for info on siting and sizing mufflers etc http://www.superchevy.com/technical/engines_drivet...
Im sure google can give us a nice answer
"Resonator
The function of the resonator is to remove exhaust resonance or "boom" at particular engine loads without restricting exhaust gas flow affecting engine"
"Removing the Resonator
The resonator does not function also as emissions control device, so removing it and putting a straight pipe connecting the catalytic converter and the exhaust pipe will not cause the car to fail emissions test. Instead, some horsepower can be realized and not to mention the loudness of the exhaust. However, with a tuned muffler, the sound can be toned down to a deep throaty sound that is not irritable."

Thanks guy's, a bit more info for me to consider.....
Forgot to mention I got the two central silencers removed from my VZ cv8 and some straight through sections made up at AAS in Newcastle. The difference is quite impressive for the price (£80), with a much improved V8 sound at idle, slightly louder under load but still quiet when cruising along. I'm next going there to have the resonator removed and an x-pipe fitted, the guys there seem very knowledgeable and genuinely interested in Monaros ( they have two GTOs in various states of dismantling).

I take it you mean that you had the small silencers removed which are in front of the rear axel? Did you have any pipe work replaced or is the rest of the system standard?
thanks again.....

Thats correct mate, for the moment the rest of the system is standard VZ cv8, until I go back to AAS to get an X-pipe fitted. I really was pleasantly surprised at the improvement over standard, give them a ring and ask for Stuart if you're interested, they'll do as little or as much work to your exhaust as you want. Good professional outfit.
