as ive had my monaro for a week now, ive come to the conclusion that my exhaust is far too quiet! its rude not to let that v8 get heard!

ive had a quote for two pipes coming from the middle silencers straight to the back of the car with no back box.

question is should i go the whole hog and get the middle silencers removed!?! (i know this will be epic!)

your opionions would be appricitated

cheers kyle

(its a 04 cv8 btw)

You might want to ask another question...
"How many people on here have an exhaust system without any back box(es), and how does it sound?"
Normally the 2 middle boxes are the first to go, then as you get brave, head towards the rear and get switchable back boxes, and finally go the whole hog and get headers....

There's loads of options mate, but first thing you might consider is to ditch that central silencer( only costs pennies), then consider reducing the size of the huge rear box to a much less restrictive one.

or I could do you a really good deal on a 2nd hand early edition Wortec exhaust for your car which I happen to still have in my shed. Should sound a lot better than stock and flow a bit better but as I say its an early model so didnt have removable sections that later ones had. Can send you pictures if you're interested. I bought it when I went to pick up an engine and supercharger from an insurance write off. Comes in 2 sections but still a bit too long to fit in a Monaro for transporting. You can email me for more info well_fans@hotmail.com

I think so, but then I've never seen under the Utes. Do they have the same exhaust set up as the Monaro VY/VZ?

No cats & no boxes (centre & rear) are handy should you loose a piston as it can exit freely without the need to replace cats or mufflers.

As for the sound, quite a few guys at Le Mans have always said I had the best sounding car there, kept it like that for a year or so as I had 11 penalty points to live with so drawing that much attention kept my speeds normally in check.

Run the Wortec x system now with centre/rear boxes, still get black flagged at Goodwood for exceeding 105 db under full chat & civilised for every day use & no drone at 80-90 mph. Got 'tugged' recently over twice the ***** ***** so I have taken off the road for a while to keep my license (clean).

Mines an LSI, SC'd

If you can afford the electric cross over unit (Wortec/Monkfish)that would be the best of both worlds.

think he's just being funny - the number of people on here now pushing the limits on the stock internals with superchargers etc are risking piston failure, should that happen then an additional cost for fixing it would be having to replace your exhaust if parts of the piston went careering out the exhaust port and wrecked the cats or silencers. Just sounds like a good excuse to me to fit an LS7 block and 3" exhaust at the same time

Surely you'd need a 4" system for pistons to exit cleanly?

ive seen the guy today and due to funds ive come up with a cost effective option, im going to have the two centre silencers chopped out and replaced with stainless pipe, straight to the standard backbox, it should sound ok, with a small power gain, and when ive got more money buy a new backbox

without wanting to appear too cheeky what were you quoted for the chopping out and welding in of the new pipe sections - roughly speaking are we talking <100 quid, 100-200 quid or more? I may need some cat pipes modded later in the year if I get my headers sorted out and should involve a similar amount of work.

no not at all, 170, with a new tail pipe welded on to the original backbox also, the work also has a lifetime guarantee

I took out the centre boxes as shown. Made it sound OK, but catback and proper X-pipe sounds better IMO.

The H-pipe as shown is actually a balance pipe from the factory, ie it is open to both banks.

yeah i noticed the balance pipe, when he had it up on the ramps, take it you had it running through the original backbox? is it quite a bit louder?

I did use the original backbox. Mine is a vxr, the box for a cv8 is slightly different where the pipes go into it.

The CV8 box is the one with the right angle bends going into it.

not certain so dont quote me but I thought it was Pacemaker that Wortec used to provide their headers. Certainly well thought of down under from what I read in the magazines and they offer the ceramic coating as an option to reduce the under bonnet temperatures. Certainly not the cheapest option available if thats anything to go by.

not too bad, tailpipes pieces are normally around 60-70 quid supplied. You didnt take any photos while you were under the car did you because looking at the photos you put up the other day I'm not convinced your exhaust pipes looked standard anyway. Your back box definitely looks like the photo posted above in this thread?
