slight ticking noise

i noticed today on idle my monaro was making a slight ticking noise (not very loud), checked the oil and it seemed fine.
as i said the noise is not loud, but i get paranoid!
is the ls1 renowned for making a bit of valvetrain noise? or am i worrying too much?!
cheers kyle

If I'm not mistaken yours is an cv8? As long as theres oil in it and its not burning any, you have nothing to worry about. The LS1 really is a tough old bird. (Theyre also lumpy on idle).

yeah its a cv8, its burned about 1/2 a litre in 1100 miles i assume thats accepable? no blue smoke or anything.
im changing the oil tonight so il be able to keep a better eye on it.

I have NEVER had to top my LS1 up inbetween services.....sometimes 15k miles. by your calculation, I would have burnt 7 litres of oil...... now that would worry me.
I know some engines like to burn oil RX8's for example - a litre every 1k miles, but thats down to the engine design. I would wait for a bit more feedback, but I would say imho thats quite a lot of oil being burnt. How many miles has it done?
yes seems like a allot to me, was half way up on the dipstick marker when i checked it today, saying that i only waited 5 mins where as the handbook says you have wait 15mins for the oil to drain into the sump. so there is a small chance it could just be being a mong.
its only got 46k on the clock.

Leave it on a flat surface overnight then check again in the morning. Its always worth doing an accurate check before worrying about it mate.
Ticking on idle is usually a hydraulic valve lifter. If you're using any quantity of oil (and not got a leaky gasket someplace to explain the loss), then it may be that you have a worn valve guide. Take to a good Chevy V8 specialist to diagnose if you're at all concerned. With a worn guide, you would expect to see signs of burnt oil on the sparkplugs after a decent period of running, but possibly not from the exhaust as unless it's a big amount it'll probably be all burnt up shortly after the cat.

Oil usage definitately seems to depend on the engine, my ls2 drinks a fair bit i've discovered and she's only done 7k so far, whereas others say they don't use any.
Combination of quality control, low drag piston rings (in some VXR's), and PCV system on the LS1's is to blame from what I can gather.
As said wouldn't worry too much just remember to check it regularly
Its a steady oil change as a local mechanic used to say

my LS1 uses no oil but then it doesnt get redlined that often. LS1 valvetrain has a reputation for being a bit noisy - a lot of the aftermarket kits claim to quieten it down amongst other gains. Was also reading tonight that the stock valve guides are prone to a bit of wear due to the rockers GM used pushing the valve tip down at an angle against them, worse at higher lifts with aftermarket cams. Supposed to be good for 100k miles but apparently the valve guides are a bit weak and can cause some oil use if worn. If really worried next time your going south to Leeds for a visit go the extra 100 miles or so to see Mark at Rapid. Otherwise mine will be back on the road next week (fingers crossed) so if you want to listen to it for a comparison I'm sure we could arrange to meet up before going further afield with the investigations.

yeah sounds like a plan, i changed the oil last night, and replaced it with fresh 5/30. ill now keep a eye on the consumption. i wont be down leeds for another month or so as i live in scotland, but when i am ill give you a shout

My LS1 uses hardly any between changes and is pretty quiet when warm but can sound a bit ticky when stone cold but I think this is normal. It is a bit whiny but I think that's down to the power steering pump which I understand can be quite noisey. The LS1 can sound a bit "thrashy" with the bonnet open, I think it's a combination of being aluminium, there being quite a lot of anciliaries and the fuel injectors being right on top of the engine.
