VXR 500 / Supercharged 6.0 VXR
Discussion
Hi all,
I’m contemplating the purchase of a VXR 500 or a modified Supercharged 6.0 VXR. The main attraction of the car was the performance times that I had read about for sub £20k.
I know performance times aren’t everything, I’d just like to clarify the performance before I take this any further as the Monaro VXR 500 is top of my shortlist at the moment but that is due to the performance that I have seen quoted.
I have seen the VXR 500 quoted at 8.5 seconds from 0-100 mph. Is this correct as I’ve been told by somebody that knows their muscle cars that it’s actually more like 10.9 seconds, link below:
http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/Search-Results...
8.5 seconds would be incredibly quick and would be the main selling point for me if it were true as this would make it so much faster than M5’s, M6’s, 996 Turbo, Mustangs and the Z06 that I wouldn’t be able to consider any other car.
However, the field would be opened back up if the VXR 500 does 0-100mph in 10.9 seconds and I would have to reconsider the cars mentioned above.
I’d appreciate it if someone can clarify the VXR 500 stats and how it compares to the competition.
I’d also be interested to know if one of the cars I mentioned or perhaps something else that I haven’t considered is capable of outperforming the VXR 500 (straight line when rolling) and offering similar practicality.
I have a stock 6L Monaro. I think 8.5 to 100 is optimistic even for a supercharged car.
There will be plenty of power and loads of torque but the key to a low 0 to 100 time is traction.
Even in stock form a Monaro is quite difficult to launch without a lot of wheel spin, a supercharged car will be even more tricky.
O to 100 does not tell you the whole story.

Dont think a vxr500 will do 0-100 in 8.5secs! My vxr600 does it though, well according to the pods timing gear anyhow and that is very fast!!. As already stated - 0-100 is down to traction really, try looking at the midrange acceleration times as this is alot more realistic and really shows how easy the big 6 engines are to drive. Also comparing a "cheap" vxr500 to an M5, SL55 etc etc is a little unfair as not only the purchase price but also the maintenance costs are very different! Go ask your local BMW garage what a major service cost then see what one fo the specialists here would charge for a Ro.
I would highly doubt the VXR500 does 0-100 in 8.5 seconds.
Interesting link here

It lists a Holden HSV GTS Supercharger at 9.5s. No idea where the stats or info come from, but I assume they tested something.
Ahh, just spotted it...some of the figures are calculated, and it seems that is one of them.
How did the pod measure 0-100 ? Or did it happen to coincide with the 1/8th mile ?

Thanks for all the input.
I appreciate traction is a problem but I am looking to compare on a like for like basis over a measurement that is longer than 0-60.
Ideally I'd like to know 20-100 or something similar but this isn't widely available for each car.
I've owned a number of M Power cars and am looking to the next level. I had considered the M5 or M6 as I don't feel the M3 offers enough power. The VXR 500 entered the equation as it seemed to be quicker than Munich's best.
Perhaps I need to take a step back and re-assess what is available. I had also heard that a remapped 335d was quicker than a VXR 500 when rolling but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a derv.
It would be interesting to know how the VXR 500 compares to similarly powered cars when rolling in the real world from the owners. What can it leave for dead that is impressive? What keeps up with it or leaves it behind that shouldn't?
I've read about the VXR 600 too, let me know if you fancy selling it as I may be interested

If you honestly think you can improve on the overall mix of capabilities served up by an unbridled Munchen V10, especially at full chat, for the £30-35k it realistically costs, then let's have a chat:I've yet to find anything remotely close.

all I know is that for £32K my VXR8 Carbon pi
ed all over an M5 E60 and Porsche C4S in a straight line. I reckon it would easily be the other way around if you throw in a few twisties mind...though I'm hoping to change that with the pedders stuff going on tomorrow!!
Also I've yet to meet up with a 996/7 turbo, had a drive in one and they're ballistic so it'll be interesting to see in a straight line at least...

If the VXR 500 isn't up to M6 performance then I shall happily stump up the £35k. However, I'd rather have M6 performance for £20k and sacrifice a little luxury.
The car I'm looking for will only be commuting on dual carriageways and motorways. No track days, no country lanes. All I'm looking for is straight line fun and practicality.

As has been said, you can get what you want (540-600BHP+) for ~£23-30K depending whether you go Monaro or VXR8.
There are already examples of VXR8 with this sort of power going for £26-30K or you can pick up standard VXR8s for as little as £21K and then spend another £7-8K on a sc.
Monaro would be less as the initial car is probably gonna be a year or so older to start with.
You'd be best off driving M5/6 and a s/c VXR8...the beemer feels more solid handling wise and the power characteristics are pretty different I would say...also M series much better interior. I love the M5 (not so much the M6) but 5/6 series are just so common I went s/c VXR8 for something a bit more characterful (read rough and raw!). I'm glad I made the decision I did, but everyone is different!!
Go drive both...and make your mind up!

theres an 04 5.7LS1 based VXR for sale in the classifieds for under 10k - drop the engine out it and sell it for 1.5-2k then drop in a new LSX block with fully hardened internals, decent camshaft and heads, twin turbo, 3" exhaust and headers for 700-800rwhp and still have change from 30k. Of course you will die the first time you boot it coming off a roundabout but there's very little on the road that will ever get close to keeping up with you in a straight line. Oh and because its an early car you can stick two fingers up to the government as well as it'll only cost you 220 quid a year road tax or whatever its currently at, oh and you may want to invest in shares in a tyre company while you're at it.

LMAO, you've been spending too much time in the P&P!Joking aside though, mate has a remapped 335d. I don't know who mapped it - think it was down on the south coast somewhere? On a straight drag, my standard 6.0 VXR *just*, (and I do mean *just*) had the edge on it, on a drag from perhaps 30-ish up to 130-ish, but I wouldn't have liked to put any money on it, it was that close.

Ah, yes and of course, you've seen this happen time and again?
What specific (claimed) power outputs are we talking about for comparison?
At what point do issues of driveability/reliability impact the issue?
The M6 can go to G Power and play the same game so where are you drawing lines in the sand?
