Hi all,

Just wondered really, a friend of a friend has a seat cupra r that he says he has tuned to 275 horses. We went out for a bit of a run and on an incline of about 35 degrees we both nailed it from 20 to about 90 m... err leptons. A short run. He didn't get away but I couldn't reel him in. I realized at the time that the 'ro has a fat ass so it was a bit of an uphill struggle but with a lot of torque I thought the old girl would have done better.confused I was a bit gutted and he was very smug. Tw*t. Does this seem right or is car in need of a tune or something. Car is a totally stock 6.0l vxr except for larger aftermaket exhaust which was already there.

Many thanks

Yeah i'd do what Gareth said. That way you'll be able to compare it to others and see if its normal. The aftermarket exhaust, was the engine remapped after instillation do you know. May need a good tune.

A quick look at the science, the Cupra is much lighter 1330Kg vs 1700Kg. Given it is a turbo to, you were probably silly to have taken it on!

I'd guess that the combination of heavy car and 3.50:1 diff caught up with you. However, you still have a V8 monster and he has a Skoda/Seat/VW shopping trolley.

my missussissussiss brother has a Honda Civic CRX SiR (v-tech) and we had a run up the same hill + down the other side but I bottled it hard when the twisty bits arrived. His car went off like a bullet. Handled like it was on rails. it's only about 1/3 length of the 'ro and weighs about 4.5 k/g's. Very quick but doesn't rattle window's through villages. Ugly as sin too.

To me it seems very much down to the gearing and revs on these cars, I thought when getting it with the size of the engine would be very quick all the time but ive not found it to be the case, ive been caught out a few times from being in the wrong gear at the wrong revs to then have to do some serious work to catch up!

In my 200 bhp astra coupe, I couldn't keep up with a standard 200 bhp cupra, so I would say an extra 50% power on such a light car would make for a very quick car, but as has been said, if you'd continued up into ton and a half territory, you may have been surprised at the Ro.....

Thing is with the Ro, if you don't keep pushing it, or are caught napping, it makes for hard work, but generally you should be able to close the gap on most occasions once the revs start to build....

Like I said in my post, these cars are naturally lazy!

hi all

- ive always thought that post 200 horses, it takes a lot of power to completely embarass someone, once rolling

i used to have an old rover 420 turbo - tuned and checked on dyno, to a healthy 250bhp, and same amount of torque. weighed only 1200 kilos. Mad, old thing. On a pistonheads meet, met up with a chap with a red 'Ro, supercharged. I think it was around the 500bhp mark.

On the duel carrigeway, left me like i was going backwards-

On a similar occasion, with what i think was a standard 'ro, 04 5.7, not much in it around road legal speed- but i was in no doube his car was superior in every single way to mine- i had to stir my box hard- he probably didnt even change gear! My cars little 2 litre turbo was whislting and chattering away like a jet fighter- his car was gently thundering away, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Oh, and he could go round corners, my car had jelly for suspension!

So its easy to make a shopping trolley go fast, but not so easy to make an impression like those Ro's left on me!

I think it would take a lot more power to truly embarrass him on the road. (if you want to embarrass him though, goto a drag strip, and watch his fwd torque steer away...)

I wouldnt play with hot hatches below 100mph if I were you, there made of coke cans and plastic bottles and as such weigh sod all. Add a 2ltr Turbo and they are quick up to around a ton then they start suffering through lack of torque. Just ask Jezz as his better halfs (sorry mate - better looking!) VXR astra chucks out nigh on 300hp and is rapid as hell lower down... thats the reason he has had to go 427 TT... smile
