Is there anything quicker than a 6.0 Monaro...
Discussion
...for similar money, that's also not too old? I've been having a think, WRT opting out of the company car scheme, and can't find any.
E39 M5 - maybe, but too old. 996 911 Turbo - probably, but lots more expensive. TVRs - doubt it?
What cars give you guys a good run for your money?
Is the Monaro the performance bargain of the decade? Hmmm...

The question you really should be asking yourself, is what rear wheel drive v8 with a limited slip diff and switchable traction control will do excellent donuts and powersides for better value than the monaro.
This is because basic fundamental prerequisites are;
Loads of room for tall drivers
V8 soundtrack
RWD performance
Cheap to upgrade to 600bhp
Now find me something

Quicker or Faster?
Handling or Ride Quality?
Power or Torque?
Quicker - let's say, up to 120- or 130-ish. Less bothered about the top end. Handling less important. Torque is nice, but quicker is the main point. Handling or Ride Quality?
Power or Torque?

lots of different options, but the answer to your question is YES, plenty.
For less than £20k? (and even nearer £15k, looking at the classifieds) You amaze me
EDIT: should have also mentioned, to opt out of the company scheme requires the car purchased to be <6 years old at all times - so realistically, 2004 or newer.

go to autotrader, you can get an FQ evo for 13k...which will get you to illegal speeds quicker than a Ro, but that's not the point is it?

An M5 may be a good choice.....but if something goes wrong with it, it may cost the price of another M5 to fix it.
You'll be hard pushed to find anything remotely similar to a Monaro, with its low operating costs. There is a lot to be said for keeping a simple design.
Indeed! For the same price as a VXR8 you could get a nice Ferrari F348, its ultimately faster, costs similar to buy but the annual servicing cost is equivilant to 3 years servicing of the VXR8. Also Ferraris like to catch fire, oftenYou'll be hard pushed to find anything remotely similar to a Monaro, with its low operating costs. There is a lot to be said for keeping a simple design.

Amazing how an ancient over head 2 valve/cylinder push rod engine can still hack it!You'll be hard pushed to find anything remotely similar to a Monaro, with its low operating costs. There is a lot to be said for keeping a simple design.

The E39 M5 appeals to me too but I do get twitchy about the cost if something goes wrong.
That said, what are the reliability issues that Monaros have?
Its not just the engine. That said, what are the reliability issues that Monaros have?
Figure say a clutch...brake discs/pads, exhaust, suspension...all of which can be considered wear and tear consumables.
The M5 goes way overboard with fancy electronic controls everywhere. All great when it works. ££££££££££££££££ when it doesnt or needs replaced.
I love the look of the new M5's, they are fantastic....but unless I was filthy rich and buying it new with a warranty, no way would I ever buy one.
Price some shocks for an M5....Price a clutch for an M5...Price an exhaust for an M5...brake discs etc etc etc
Even if something does break on the Monaro, for the most part, given its common sense simple design ( yes cheap in some ways ), it means that any repairs will be affordable.
sigmund: really?

Indeed no - I am tempted by the Monaro's relative anonymity and long-legged comfort. And even its relative economy on long runs. This is for work - a thrashy Jap box definitely wouldn't suit, and nor would anything heavily breathed on - I've done the modified thing, and will again, but this is meant to be a (fairly) sensible daily.Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
