I have decided I can't afford to supercharge my VZ CV8. I have fitted the Wortec catback, headers and cats and I am happy with the gains over stock. I am thinking along the lines of trying to optimise the intake side of things.

What can I do to get more air going in to the engine without resorting to supercharging or heads? Looking on the internet and reading between the lines on here a larger throttle body with a OTRCAI and getting rid of the restriction of the MAF sensor might liberate a few horses.

Can anyone offer any opinions on this idea?

Not much point on the stock engine. You can port the stock TB which is just as good. If you google port 75mm ls1 throttle you will see some info.
If you went heads and cam, then yes definately change to a fast92/92 or similar. Otherwise just port your stock one yourself with a dremel etc.
oTRACI will also help by lowering temps and removing restrictions in the intake.

yeah, no point on the standard car. You will need to change the TB if you go FI and want more than 370 whp though. I have a 101mm PWR which was about 800 quid I think. If I were you I'd save for a cheap set of Dart heads or similar to make the most of those headers. They aren't expensive.

is it only the VXR that has the 90mm throttle body, I thought the VZ had that as well even if it is fly by wire? I fitted a bigger throttle body and went mafless on my 04 cv8 (VY) and with the exhaust and remap and large bore smooth intake pipe it all helped add a few ponies. In terms of value for money I'm not sure the throttle body is a good deal on its own. You could go for a Weiland(?) or FAST manifold and larger throttle body combo to get maybe 20rwhp more with a remap but remember if you then go FI that the intake would then be "spare" parts.

Depends on the setup.

I know people who make well over 1000bhp, and have run low 8's at 160+ on the standard TB.

If you are blowing through the TB...the standard diameter is more than adequate for anyone.

If going down the n/a tuning route. By the time you buy heads, cam etc and have it all fitted....Im sure that you are already into, or beyond the price of some of the cheaper supercharger setups available ??

Probably yes. Hence why the free mod of porting it yourself is good.
I understand the ETC 5.7 is still a 75mm setup. Only LS2's are 90mm.
A fast92/92 is expensive, like maybe $1200US or so. But worth it if you want to go all out NA.
The new LSX102 LS7 intake is calling my name. I might pick one up while at sema later in the year.
So in summary dont buy a throttlebody. Just port your own unless you want to go all out NA in which case its part of the overall package which wont be cheap.

'Port your own'? Any chance of some instructions for the dremel equipped numpty?

Im not sure you need to do the epoxy stage. I just removed the lip and bevelled the blade. Huge difference on tip in due to larger airflow at lower throttle. WOT gains are harder to measure with the buttometer but by most accounts are still significant on the dyno

Easy peasy.

Seems to give a bit more towards the top end, but will have to try it at the strip to be sure

Looks good, did you notice the better throttle response too?
Nice job. Free horsepower smile

Just been for a 'sensible' drive, throttle response is better. Not a bad result for 90 minutes work clap

did you mod the stop as well so the blade opens fully flat? If so have you checked the voltages as suggested on ringrams post? Think I'll take a look at the larger version I had fitted to my car - see if there's any room for improvement with it as well. Assuming of course it'll actually fit the charger - still to be tested because if it doesnt I'll need to mod the stock unit I have instead.

I didnt bother with the TPS voltage thing. I figured if it broke Id worry about it then. As it was it worked fine.

I tweaked the throttle stop by about 1mm, that made the blade parallel to the airflow. Haven't checked TPS voltage, seems to drive OK tho smile

Wow, sounds like a very good mod - just wondering if I have the nerve to do it though !! Knowing me would take too much off or something.

Like the idea of a polished TB though, would be good to experiment with the Dremel polisher.

Cheers

hmmmm, anyone know if its much more trouble to take the LS2 ETC throttle body apart.....?

Same principle, I dont think they are very challenging. But the 90mm flows way more air anyway, so you probably arnt maxing it out. Ive not bothered on my engine yet. I understand the intake is the restriction rather than the throttle as on earlier 75mm setups. Hence why they went 90mm in the first place. So porting will just get you throttle response. But you might need to be careful as the ETC setups have limits to the amount of air thats allowed to flow at certain throttle posistions before they throw a DTC code.

ah but thats only a quick tweak of a table with magic box of EFI tricks provided by your good self smile
