Unleaded Vs Super Unleaded

What does everyone use?
Can you run a tuned supercharged car on Unleaded and have I been wasting my money on Super Unleaded? Does it really make a difference?
Just interested really with the current petrol prices...

If it has been tuned to run on SUL, then it may or may not be fine, depending how good the low octane map is, and how sensitive the knock sensors are to save your engine from destruction.

Just thinking on the daily drive if I could get away with 95 stuff, then when I wanted a spirtied drive or am going to an event then put in the good stuff.
Most of the time Im only plodding up the M23/M25 which you can only go as fast as the car in front

Don`t think it works like that Chris, if the car defaults to the low octane map you`ll be there till a few tankfull`s of the good stuff coaxes the map back out of hiding.
Supercharged Id stick with highest octane you can, charge temps will mean your timing is not optimal anyway. So reducing the propensity to knock will allow timing to be more optimal.
NA use the fuel your engine is tuned too.
Im running on 95 and tuning to that. I dont expect to need to change.

Rich - bloody reference to intake temperatures again! Id still be in hiding if I were you after having your arse wipped by an old M5!
As for fuel - the M5 like the 99 tesco stuff and is noticably faster on it having been forced to put 95 in it just before the drag day! aarrrr!
The SC Ro drinks Tesco 99 or BP ultimate only as it make a noticable difference to performance and is likely to that its been tuned just for that. NA can be tuned to run on either as far as I am aware so check how it was tuned.

I've always used Vmax, Roger did say the LS2 seems to like Tescos stuff so ill try that.
I always thought that Tescos just brought the left overs from tankers though from BP/Shell so you never really knew what you where getting or is that a load of BS and tescos is something completely different?

No, no, I have the timesheet to prove you came last!

Mind you both of our times were shocking.

Thorney Motorsport did a test last year on petrol in performance cars and Tesco 99 came top of the pile. TBH the discussion on ron ran ren etc numbers can go on forever, I just fing the 99 stuff good in that my timing does not get pulled on the Ro when I use it. t is ok but not as good, its whatever you find best depending on yr tune TBH.Rich - I agree - will get the Ro out next time and try tristing a halfshaft up with some slicks to see how it should be done!

Neither, LPG for me
Have tried Super, regular and LPG and can't tell the difference between any of them tbh. (6.0 VXR). I'd run it on coal if I could. Edited by kjmac on Tuesday 19th May 13:04

I take it you mean bought. Tesco 99 is a different fuel and is made by Greenergy. It's what I always use. http://www.greenergy.com/tesco_99_octane/index.htm...I always thought that Tescos just brought the left overs from tankers though from BP/Shell so you never really knew what you where getting or is that a load of BS and tescos is something completely different?

Indeed, having performed lengthy logging both for 98/99 and 95 I can say there was no pulling, knock or anything at all. That was with the hsv spark table which the had the ve and other adjustments made to it. some say their table is on the aggressive side but I think the dyno run proved it was very smooth and consistent.NA use the fuel your engine is tuned too.

When logging I looked for kr and regardless of fuel it was always the same figure in teh same cells. Either a dodgy sensor (unlikely!!) or just resonance at those engine loads causing the sensor to trigger.
It was only towards the death of the last set of plugs could you hear pinking at load. New NGK's with a correct gap resulted in a much stronger spark, noticable pick up and no pinking again.
In other words, 95 is more than adequate unless you ahve had a tune applied that was designed for high octane. Going higher is false economy unless you are going to use the fuel fairly rapid as the rating drops off, on some fuels astonishingly quickly.
You also have to balance up how often are you in highload areas, WOT etc.
FI/SC go as high as you can get to run that little bit cooler

Some described 99 at the time, as nothing more than 95 with octane boosted. The base fuel used was pretty poor, whereas with Shell, the actual base fuel was much better.
It's maybe improved since then though.
I guess if you tune to only use 95, you can always be sure of its quality lol

For the record i have never run the Monaro on anything but the best fuel and never will. Just as i wouldnt serve Col value bacon. You want the best for those you love.
