Have seen a couple of under bonnet pictures where peoples air intake pipes look 'carbon fibre' like although the airmass meter and airfilter box all look the same.

I still have the standard pipe which looks crap and can't be smooth inside can it ? I thought it would be better if its was a smooth inside to aid airflow.

Is this a pipe that can be bought seperatley or is it part of an induction kit ?

(I'm only after a nice pipe that looks good really - sad eh ?!)

Pretty sure they come out of NZ. Not sure if somebody over there sells them. Ok...I've hit the google. Make sure you get the right one as one is MAFless and one is with a MAF.

I got one fitted with my mafless tune and larger throttle body, does make a considerable imoprovement in the air flow from the filter.

Sorry don't understand what the mafless tune is ?

You do away with the airflow meter ?

yep, maf removed - its what the aussies generally do but in theory with our changing climate it will work well in some conditions less so in others - havent noticed much difference myself at any time of the year so quite happy to do without it. Mark at RapidGB is a firm believer in mafless, Wortec tend not to remove them on their basic tuned vehicles, not sure if they still leave it in with the big stuff they do when they start going north of 600bhp. You want more technical info on benefits/hazards of removing it speak to ringram or try the search as its been discussed plenty times before.

No theory on this planet mate.
Millions of Hemi engines run mafless from the factory.
If someone cant get a mafless setup running in all weather conditions then its not any theory thats wrong its the tune!

The whole idea of the MAF and Mafless models is to measure the density of the air. The MAF does it directly using a heated element.
Mafless uses a map of engine efficiency, rpm and intake temperature to calculate the airmass in each cylinder at each load point. Its only as accurate as your volumetric efficiency table and intake temperature modeling.

Mafless gives you better throttle response and an unlimited range of airflow. The maf isnt as accurate at low airflow, plus it has a hard limit of 512g/sec in GM ECU's
However over the years the MAF's have improved a bit. To do a proper tune you need to tune without the MAF first to get the VE table accurate, then turn it back on.

For belt and braces, auto adjusting set and forget setups where you dont want every last ounce of performance and response then the MAF wins.

It you want every last spec of performance and have a high output engine which would max out the MAF anyway then you will want to be mafless tuned. Maf maxes out around 450rwhp or thereabouts IIRC.

Another benefit is that you can get a better intake setup working.
Something like this even smile

Why not get something like this mate?
http://www.otrcai.com/index.cfm?PageId=7

Donkv8 has one and still has his MAF.

This type of intake will allow a much cooler intake temperature due to less distance to travel into the engine. Plus a freer flowing filter etc.

I guess it depends on what you want.

The highest horsepower stock LS1 Ive seen on Charlie's Dyno was a mafless one done by RapidGB. I think it was 330rwhp or so. Which was over what some tuned LS2's did.

Thanks for all the info again thumbup

Looks like those don't fit an LS1 according to the blurb ?

Mine was advertised as having a Mafless tune but still had the airflow meter in place. From what you've said above that can still be true.

Yeah if its truely mafless, but still has the maf in place then if you scan the car it will have a P0102 DTC code for MAF failure.

Got the same question myself! Looks from the pics the carbon pipe definately wont fit our make supercharger im afraid.

Have been looking for an improved air box design so going to order one of these, anyone know the pipe diameter for me to get a air filter ordered?

Let me know how you get on with it and if you can get a pic that would be excellent! Particularly interested in any improvements in induction noise.
