Hi Guys & Gals,

I’d like to pick your brains if you’ve time, please excuse any numpty questions or ramblings.

I’ve been checking out this forum for the last couple of years and have found it a mine of information. I was on the verge of buying a Monaro CV8 in ’97 but after a test drive decided I’d continue on within the VW fold and sold my V6-4Motion Golf and bought a white Golf GTI Edition 30 (did consider R32 but was too heavy and lumpen – sounded great though!). Now I like my ED30, but I don’t love it like my old torquey V6 2.8 Golf.

I’ve lusted over owning a V8 for many years (I’m a muscle car fan), but so-called common-sense got the better of me... you know the story depreciation, mpg, road tax, CO2, into the unknown, etc. I was even serious about the GT Mustang but the LHD issue was a worry for a daily driver. I also need the 4-seat practicality as my wife’s car is a MR2.

Over the last year I’ve been warming to the brutal looks of the VXR8, especially in Heron White, and I love the idea of the LS3 6.2 Corvette engine. I’ve also noticed that the new prices have been dropping rapidly to such a degree that you can now get new LS3’s for around £25k. This seems too good an opportunity to overlook. So if you’ll indulge me, I have some questions for you VXR8 owners.

1. I only cover about 7k a year, so hopefully fuel won’t be a major stumbling block, however on mainly town commuting I’m currently getting 25mpg (prior Golf V6 was 20mpg), I guess 15mpg in the VXR8?

2. Servicing seems pretty cheap, Picadors in Sholing would be my dealer of choice (Sewards are closer but I’ve not heard any mention of them on here). £150 a year about right?

3. Vauxhall gives 3-year warranty. I’ve read various horror stories on here... warped disc rotors, engine issues... are these isolated problems. What about all the happy, trouble-free drivers? Again Graham and John at Picadors seems to come out well on customer care. Can you confirm?

4. Wortec or Walkinshaw exhaust? Are they just cat back? Which gives the most authentic American V8 burble? Worth the outlay? The switchable loudness I like, is this only available on a full system?

5. Are VXR8’s undersealed and corrosion resistant. I’ve seen a couple of unloved ones at Sewards and the alloys were all corroded and disc brake bells all rusty. If you keep them properly valeted do they stand up to our various weather conditions (ie salt).

6. Not too big for multi-story carparks/parking bays... I guess they’re the size of a Merc E-Class?

7. To replace all Vauxhall badges with HSV, around £50? Best place... Walkinshaw, Vauxhall or eBay?

8. The state of Vauxhall, Holden (HSV) & GM. Are VXR8 prices dropping due to uncertain future? Is it daft to sink money into an ailing company? Will spares be a nightmare?

Well I’ve bored you all rigid, but I thank you for your time. Any responses would be gratefully received. I’m feeling it might be the right time to move up to V8 muscle.

Kind regards... Hotrod smile (aka Steve)

Hi Hotrod30
I have just bought my second VXR8.I had a black Monaro VXR ls1,px'd it for a black vxr8,loved it,however I left the v8 clan, and bought a EVO X SST when they were launched. After 13 months I decided to get the VXR8 again.
Some answers to your questions as I see them.
Big car, tight in some car parks.
Mpg very dependant on type of journey, and right foot.Expect overall 17-19.
£70-£80 for a set of badges from Walkinshaw.
I'm in Dorset, and go to Picador.
I've had no problems (touch wood) with common issues.
My cars get used in all weathers, just jet wash underneath occasionally.probably won't own the cars long enough to worry.
It would seem unlikely that spares (service parts) will dry up,and there are several speacialists who will sort most things.
I hope this helps, and I'm sure others will be along soon with there views.

15 about right

2. Servicing seems pretty cheap, Picadors in Sholing would be my dealer of choice (Sewards are closer but I’ve not heard any mention of them on here). £150 a year about right?

Sewards poole are Wortec dealers so service sould be fine too. circa £180

3. Vauxhall gives 3-year warranty. I’ve read various horror stories on here... warped disc rotors, engine issues... are these isolated problems. What about all the happy, trouble-free drivers? Again Graham and John at Picadors seems to come out well on customer care. Can you confirm?

Correct - however done 20000 miles in my LS3 no warranty issues yet

4. Wortec or Walkinshaw exhaust? Are they just cat back? Which gives the most authentic American V8 burble? Worth the outlay? The switchable loudness I like, is this only available on a full system?

Wortec personally, you can fit the switch to catback not just full system bit headers are well worth the extra.

5. Are VXR8’s undersealed and corrosion resistant. I’ve seen a couple of unloved ones at Sewards and the alloys were all corroded and disc brake bells all rusty. If you keep them properly valeted do they stand up to our various weather conditions (ie salt).

Look after it and it will be fine.

6. Not too big for multi-story carparks/parking bays... I guess they’re the size of a Merc E-Class?

Parking not to bad.

7. To replace all Vauxhall badges with HSV, around £50? Best place... Walkinshaw, Vauxhall or eBay?

Just de-badge completely

8. The state of Vauxhall, Holden (HSV) & GM. Are VXR8 prices dropping due to uncertain future? Is it daft to sink money into an ailing company? Will spares be a nightmare?

GM Holden are not quite in the same s?!t from what I understand they are relatively safe.

Well I’ve bored you all rigid, but I thank you for your time. Any responses would be gratefully received. I’m feeling it might be the right time to move up to V8 muscle.

Probably yes

2. Servicing seems pretty cheap, Picadors in Sholing would be my dealer of choice (Sewards are closer but I’ve not heard any mention of them on here). £150 a year about right?

Dependant on service, but not far off

3. Vauxhall gives 3-year warranty. I’ve read various horror stories on here... warped disc rotors, engine issues... are these isolated problems. What about all the happy, trouble-free drivers? Again Graham and John at Picadors seems to come out well on customer care. Can you confirm?

Never heard of any engine issues, though VX will not want to warrant any claims if you have a supercharger on there. YMMV.
My rotors are fine. Though Ive had issues with indicators and some other minor stuff.

4. Wortec or Walkinshaw exhaust? Are they just cat back? Which gives the most authentic American V8 burble? Worth the outlay? The switchable loudness I like, is this only available on a full system?

No need on stock vehicle for performance reasons. But if you want more noise go for it. Of the 2 I prefer the Wortec due to the tailpipes. There are other options around if you do some R&D. Depends if you are after power as your primary concern or not etc.

5. Are VXR8’s undersealed and corrosion resistant. I’ve seen a couple of unloved ones at Sewards and the alloys were all corroded and disc brake bells all rusty. If you keep them properly valeted do they stand up to our various weather conditions (ie salt).

None, speak to one of the specialists, they offer undersealing etc.

6. Not too big for multi-story carparks/parking bays... I guess they’re the size of a Merc E-Class?

Not too big, just tight wink

7. To replace all Vauxhall badges with HSV, around £50? Best place... Walkinshaw, Vauxhall or eBay?

Why? (WPUK probably best if you did want to)

8. The state of Vauxhall, Holden (HSV) & GM. Are VXR8 prices dropping due to uncertain future? Is it daft to sink money into an ailing company? Will spares be a nightmare?

Yes, No, Maybe smile Probably 100,000 odd sold down under, so spares should be ok for a while even if the cost a tad more. Cant see Holden dying for at least a couple more years. Oz Govt will probably help them out. No EU state aid laws to worry about down there!

Im in a very similar position having just sold my evo and soon to be looking for a VXR8 to do about 5k miles in a year. I got quoted £350-400 verbally by Frosts at Newhaven for service on a car i was interested in at 10,000 miles so i think some shopping around may be needed as £150 - £200 seems to be being quoted on forums. I too am concerned a bit about reliability as have read a few horror stories, particularly on the VXR forums, as one guy in particular seems to have had some massive warranty work inc discs and new box, although another who had big problems admitted thrashing the car near to death.

Insurance don't seem too bad until you mention supercharger!

I am sitting on the fence at the moment as you can now buy a 2009 6.2 LS3 VXR8 in your choice of colour for £23995 so do not value used LS2 ones, 2yr old, 20-30k miles for 20K+. Vauxhall must have a few to shift!

Thanks Guys,

So they’re not undersealed, although I understand from Picador that these cars have the same anti-corrosion protection as the whole of the Vauxhall range. They checked under a new Insignia and it was finished the same as the VXR8. I guess the galvanised metal, paintwork and factory waxes combat any rusting issues. Your thoughts please.

Colour: White or Evoke? Love white on my current car, although you have to keep on top of it. Had silver in the past which always looked clean, however I like the dark grey metallic offered. Don’t want black or red... not me. Pro’s & con’s?

Hoping to get a test drive in the next few days and then will be in a better position.

Thanks Hotrod smile

I collected my one last week from James @ Picador - nice chap to do business with.

My short list of colours was between white, black and evoke. Seeing all three in the flesh a few weeks ago, evoke became 3rd choice. Hard decision between white and black but finally went for black and think it was the right choice!

Yes evoke won't show the dirt as much as the others, but doesn't look as good IMHO.

Oh, currently getting 20mpg while running in....

The only questions I have as I am moving to a VXR8 from a Monaro VXR is why is there no strengthening cross strut in the engine compartment. I looked at the Pontiax G8 GXP and there seems to be one but I cannot find a suitable picture of the HSV R8. Also does anyone know why the R8 and VXR8 have dropped the 'nostrils' on the bonnet but the G8 GXP has a better version that the GTO/Monaro. I am quite attached to them

20mpg... impressive stuff. I’m drawn to white, it looks so good when clean.

I’m off to see James tomorrow evening for a test-drive, glad to hear he’s a good guy – I’ve also been dealing with John.

Out of interest did you pay the asking price or get a decent trade-in (cheeky question I know... please email me if you wish at hotrodkkk@btinternet.com... no pressure). I’m coming from Bournemouth and looking forward to it, then the whole weekend at Goodwood smilesmile

cheers Hotrod

Don't be tempted by the white! some things still look good when they are dirty! OK a white vxr8 still looks good dirty, but if you love cleaning, black is best!

and also fastest!

I too would like to know if anyone has heard both of the switchable exhausts ie Wortec or Walkinshaw ive heard both on line and think Wortec the best also there is a Wortec approved garage in Great Horwood Bucks they offer 3 stages including exhausts from cat , full exhausts , remaps , new breathing , cams etc , then on to the superchargers which are too much for me . Also has anyone put a 12" x 3" no plate on front im going that route although dont want to look too boy racerish , full size one looks and fits c*** . Im also having wheels done in black my car is in the phantom black . Can confirm badges & wheel centres in either Holden or Walkinshaw Sport can be got from Walkinshaws im getting the chequered wheel centres , what about a debadged car ? any opinions . Also anyone got the short shift changer reckon that might be needed but giving myself time to get used to the car . Also wish they did nt have that mile per gallon disply you can watch your petrol dissapear rapidly!!! ha ha lastly sorry for the numerous use of the word also .

Our demonstrator has a full Wortec system on it. You are welcome to come and listen and drive it
