I got stuck on the M25 yesterday afternoon, and saw coolant temps as high as 116c. The car started to "stumble" above 112c. What kind of temps are you guys seeing, and do I need to rethink my cooling system now I have a dirty great FMIC in front of the rad.

I know these engines do run hot if allowed to...but I dont like anything over 100degC

Although Ive raced mine higher than that.

Think highest Ive seen is about 106deg.

If it didnt spew any coolant out, I'd say you're probably still ok. But why did it get that hot ?

It didnt spew at all, I can only assume that it is the large FMIC limiting airflow. Both fans appeared to be running. I have ordered up a 160f stat and think I will pull the front off tomorrow if I get the chance and see if I have a lot of debris in the AC condenser.

Yeah Ive reconfigured my fans to aim for just over 90*C hosted Ive seen was 94*C on the recent drag day.

maybe a stupid question so feel free to point an laugh at the essex boy!
How do you know what the temps are?
my dial only has the 1/8th markers but no temps.
I have a 05 VXR it sits at the 3/8 marker, I'm pretty happy it being there but what does that relate to in terms of temprature????

Alot of people on here have EFIlive live or similair software and spend their time train spotting... I mean reading engine parameters. I did it the old way, gauge looks half way, cut vents in the bonnet, gauge never moves now! smile

Yeah efilive or a scan-gauge that plugs into the OBD2 Port. The stock gauge is completely useless. Mine was reading just above halfway when the temp was 116c.

You can force the Monaro clocks to give coolant temp without any fancy gadgets.

I have raced with water temps as high as about 106deg, dont think Ive seen much higher.

Although Im sure Ive seen some guys in the US running hotter and not seeming overly concerned....

I'd be freaking out though !!

Something I discovered while trying the buttons on the dash -

The dash on my VZ model Monaro (6.0 VXR) has some hidden functionality.

To access:

1. Do not switch on the ignition.

2. Hold down the Mode and Set buttons to the left of the steering wheel.

3. Turn ignition key to the On position.

4. Release buttons and start engine.

You can scroll through the functions using the Mode button. Arrow buttons seem to have no function here. Set button will drop it into standard mode.

Functions are (my figs in brackets).

Version and Serial #.
Part #
Switch Voltage (5V)
Battery Voltage (14.3v)
Brake Voltage (2.06) This is with handbrake OFF, it is zero when on. [no idea what it means]
Fuel Cal Part #
Petrol Sender Value (150/255)
Remaining Fuel (8 Gal)
Instantaneous Fuel (0.64 Gal/Hour)
Coolant Temp (150F)
Speed (0 mph)
Tacho (801rpm)
Park Lamps (Off) [Unless you switch them on...]
Trouble Codes (Lots of zeroes)
Scary Mode (This beeps and tests the whole display) [See below]

Then hit Set to drop out, or go round again.

at 116 you are heading towards head damage. The spluttering may be the ecu trying to cut back everything it can to get the temp down.

Considering this is at idle it suggests that either the fans are not working properly or you have air in the coolant.

Any water escape from the pressure valve in the engine bay?
