Hi all,

Got some strange symptoms following a harrop diff cover install.

Intermittently just when driving and occasionally worse over bumpy roads i'm getting a low pitch rubbing noise from the rear end. I've checked underneath and the exhaust etc is all clear of the prop and half-shafts and everything seems secure.
The noise occasionally when driving slow comes and goes like its a high point on a disc kissing the pads. I'm also getting on one rear wheel a lot of pinky dust (i'm assuming is brake dust), not so evident on the other wheels. The cars had AP's fitted 3 weeks back.

Question is have I somehow managed to warp one rear disc? Or is there some kind of disc alignment that is done with the AP's that the diff cover fitting could have kicked out?

Help, squeaking it driving me nuts.
And something very loose on the front suspension knocking badly also in need of investigation mad

Low pitched rubbing noise is probably a rear wheel bearing. This will give a bit of play which mean the pads will need more clearance, so are more likely to rub? Dont see that it would be linked to the cover install. However, cover install will transmit more noise from the drivetrain. Diff bearing can sound the same. If it sounds like every revolution of the wheel, then probably diff output bearing, if much quicker then a pinion bearing.

I doubt you have warped a rear disc. Id say that is near impossible. Id check for bearing play, if that shows nothing, if you want to pop up i'll have a listen for you.

I'll hopefully have time to get the rear wheels off this week and check for any obvious wheel bearing slop.
This may better explain the brake dust situation. I've only ever warped front discs after heavy braking in 40* plus temps so hoped these AP's weren't that delicate smile

Are bearings a common complaint on these, even with only 9k on the clock?
If so will be a week for them, same ones gone on my BMW workhorse, much fun to get out frown

I have the same problem sounds like the brake pads are rubbing against the discs, goes after about 20mph, had the brakes skimmed but not sorted it, so am looking for the next option too.

Commonish, but not normally at that mileage. You have been dragracing though, and thats not good for drivetrain longevity

Problem was there before the drag day tongue outsmile

Warped disc article is interesting. The noise showing itself on bumpy roads would probably better indicate a potential bearing problem, plus there is nothing felt through the brake pedal (but maybe to slight combined with the smaller piston area on the rears). Will investigate hopefully tomorrow.

If the disc was warped, unevenly worn or misaligned I'd expect the braking to be uneven.

If the brakes are dragging then after a gentle drive the discs will be hot.

It's so intermittent and short time when heard that I doubt its enough to heat the disc up sufficiently to be noticed, but I will try and feel.

I had warped rear discs replaced under warranty at about 10k miles or so. There was no noise as described though.

Shows rears can warp at low mileage though.

Its not had any real abuse, Drag Day was the most and that was after the noise appeared.
The pain with the LSD is I can't free spin the rear wheels off the ground to feel any unevenness on the disc or obvious bearing noise.
Has anyone got the torque settings for the rear hub nuts. Just recalling a previous situation where a squeak appeared and the rear nuts just needed torquing back up...

bump biggrin

Drove a fair distance today. Noise goes away with light pressure on the brakes... Still likely to be the bearings?

Did anyone have the torque settings for the rear hub nuts?
