Ladies and gentlemen,

Your topic for debate is this.....

"Is it almost irresponsible for Vauxhall to be selling 420hp monsters for such a low price?"

How will it affect exclusivity?
Will it draw the wrong sort of buyer?
Will we see a larger number of write offs?

You have the floor.................................................judge

The wrong sort of buyer, is the one who cannot properly look after, and maintain their cars. Basically destroying them and abusing them.

I see your point but they are not a premium brand. So if they want a performance variant in the line up, it needs to be cheap.

Trouble is, its not that cheap. So it needs to have loads of mumbo to justify the relatively high price on a bread-and-butter brand.

Its not an easy position to be in. Holden and Ford have been doing this in Oz for years though. The advantage they have is that residuals for Euro hi-po stay high because theyre so much to buy new. This means there is always demand for the local stuff because the euro remains out of reach until its not worth having anymore. Or something.

I think we should be thankful. As for write-offs, kids have been writing off 1.0l Metros and Datsuns for years with a fraction of the horsepower.

I think its good, while it lasts. Once the Insignia VXR is launched I have the feeling prices will go back to near list and there will be a field full of VXR8`s again.

For present owners its good and bad.
Downside is that for the next year you`ll have to practically give away a second hand car.
The upside is that all the tuning houses that provide for these beasts should see a steady run of business, promoting lower prices and variety. Plus hopefully none will be strapped for work in a shrinking marketplace and move on leaving us little or no choice, because without the independants, ownership would be a completely different scenario IMO

The wrong sort of buyer is the guy who thinks..."Ooh! rwd monster for same price as fairly standard saloon/Hot Hatch.(never mind i cant afford new tyres/brakes/tax/insurance etc..I can do massive burnouts and drifting on the public roads!) I guess maybe a guy/girl with too little respect for what they are actually buying, as VX are 'giving' them away.

well the 3000GT crowd have already got their mits on the Monaro, or as it shall now be known, the Mongaro. The slashing or price has attraced the right buyer, ie me, to the fold again but having spent a few hours on the vxr forum the amount of text speak is somewhat alarming. What with the Astra boi's now upgrading to the VXR8 too I fear the average IQ had dropped to a level where I needed to step in and help out.

This is already happening with the E39 M5 - sadly. Hopefully the Munros and VXRs will be overlooked for having the "wrong" badge.

Well I moved from a 3 year old high spec 5 series to this car yesterday, without the price drop I would have had to wait another year or two for a second hand tidy low miles version, the price drop enabled me to own a brand new one without the risk of boy racer abuse smile

As for powersliding......well, I save it for the track generally but the odd slide here and there when nobody is about never hurt anyone biggrin

Its the Holden's destiny.
In NZ and Oz they are seen as the Hoon's cars. Posh people drive european stuff.
So you see its natural.

However I think the low numbers available will limit any issues. Also its likely that anyone buying now because of the price will change their minds after 6 months of fuel prices and insurance. That might means a good pile of low cost LS3's coming onto the market later.

I dont really care, as mentioned more parts and spares. I knew when buying mine prices would fall. But faced waiting for ever for the LS3, which I knew would be replaced anyway..

They have to make a buck, right? So if we, the customer, can get a deal then so be it.

I'm not a fan of the '8 (well, it's growing on me) as it has too many doors, but why not? The more the merrier I say - let's try to keep these un-PC cars on the road!

Actually £23k

I suspect that with changes in the GM empire when the current VXR8's are gone they will be gone forver in the UK - seriously doubt another V8 Vauxhall for a while...

Stu,care to comment?

Should never have been allowed into the UK in my opinion! They're ugly, they stink, they're completely gutless, they clog up the roads...... No Wait....I was thinking of peugeot.

Monaro and Vxr8 you say....Lovely cars, lots of fun. (especially Monaro)
