The cost of a gearbox
Discussion
On Friday whilst at Sherwoods of Darlington I overheard one of the reception staff speaking to one poor soul who had bought a VXR8 last October and it now requiers a new gearbox! The price £7500,00 all in... I believe it is still under warranty.
I spoke to the receptionist and informed her that you can get gearboxes in th US for around £1500,00. She Stated these gearboxes are from Australia !!!!and you have lots of taxes to pay...ect.
The thing is I believe some other people have had gearbox failures, but how? I would have thought the engines and gearboxes would have been indestructible on these cars..well short of heavy abuse at least.
Why are they breaking? Lets not forget GM have been making the things for years, they must have some idea.
Do Holden manufactuer there own engines and gearboxes or are they made in the US?

Is the throttle body getting done under warranty?
Thanks appreciate the tip! Although no idea when the car will be out next mind dont seem to have the time to drive it at the minute even with the good weather!
Tremec make them, there have been some posts here recently. They probably ship from US, to Oz to UK. So no wonder they cost so much.
Just get the proper part number and call someone like DD transmissions in the UK or Holmart in Oz and get one shipped over for about half of what they want, if not less. If you have to pay for one, see if you can get one of the new TR-6060 models which is beefier.
Though if you are stock then just a plain old new one should be fine.

The price of them is just totally inexplicable. It must be down to some sort of rip off Britain market manipulation thing. They are actually made in Mexico.
I spotted that my CV8 had the wrong ratios when I bought it and unsuccessfully sued for breach of contract. If the boxes had been available for sensible money then a more amicable outcome might have been possible.
Manual boxes are never very reliable on powerful rwd cars and very subject to driver technique.

That is the first one I have seen for sale in the UK. £2700 is still a bit more than I paid personally importing one even with all the duty and shipping.
Obviously if they are really £550 then Monk Fish would be stupid not to snap them up and offer them as an alternative to diff swaps.
In my view the ratio spread is better than changing the diff to 3.91 and that is the route the factory chose for the 6.0.
Note the one in the picture doesn't have the right shifter or a bell housing and probably not the clutch slave cylinder, but these should all swap over. Do check it is suitable for Monaro applications ie is a TUET2066 and/or GM p/n 92155485.

I could do with a new one for my VT 11 GTS (T56). Is there anything special about the ones fitted to the LS1 in my year 2000 GTS-(UK version)or will any old T65 or TR-6060 box fit. Any second hand ones out there?
I just sold a new ls1 t56 for £1400. You have to use an ls1 box as opposed to a sbc box as the lsx box has a longer input shaft. Lsx boxes are usually more expensive to. I don't know if your lsx box is specific to your car.Gassing Station | HSV & Monaro | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
