I'm Doing Fighting Torque on Sunday, Which is basically a 1 mile drag race. What is the best technique for gear changes ie. Should I be looking to change redline, max power or max torque?

Most of you will know im running SC LS3 so would this make a difference in best technique?

I have speed limiter set to max so speeds over 155mph will be achievable will be needing 6th as 5th runs out circa 155mph.

Near redline basically. 6000 shifts is ok. You should be 4000+ by the quarter, so you should be winding out in 5th by the mile. Which incidentally Im guessing it the top gear you will see.

Run to the redline in the lower gears, or change when you feel the acceleration start to fade, wherever that is. The Eatons don`t produce much extra push at the higher rpm range, its all lower down. However, if your 5-6th gear is a tall step you may fall right out of the sweet spot changing from 5th at the redline or other (see above)

If thats the case I`d hold the car in 5th to the limiter as the acceleration will still be more in 5th than changing up (remember at these speeds every gearchange costs you dear re speed) and you may find that as you will be covering ground so quickly that you`ll never increase speed quickly enough in 6th.

This is the technique I used at Vmax, and when Roger (S600) did the same he managed an increase of 3mph over his previous best. (But still slower than me though ) It may not sound like much but believe me it is.

At 160mph you`ll be travelling at 234ft/sec so even an acceleration rate of 2mph/sec (Which is quite high at that speed in 6th) will need a further 2340ft or .45 mile to increase your speed by 20mph

My guess is about 165-168mph TS.

Ps; forget the launch, nice steady gearchanges and slightly overinflate your tyres for less rolling resistance. (And tuck in your wing mirrors)

phil just make sure you change before the limiter, prob short 1st and 2nd then take the later ones higher. Lets hope that torque figure doesnt trip it biggrin Also soft launch

hi good to see someone else is going up !! you will get plenty off runs (if it is like last year) so try shifting at peak power and higher and lower see what works the best, they time the run time and the top speed , the terminal speed won`t be that different more the time to get there. last year it was only 7/8 mile so speeds were down i did 180.1mph in 7/8 (24 seconds to get there) in 5th gear, you will probably be faster in 5th than 6th. whats your rev limit set to ? see you there ,

Shift fast, and shift when it feels like you should. Really it is trial and error...there is no right rpm to shift. Everyones car will be different depending on gear ratios, power band etc etc etc.

But if you hit the rev limiter...you've stopped accellerating...which is a bit silly. SO thats a big no no

And hope their timing gear works....and hope its a mile too. They'll need to get something to watch those hungry rabbits !!!

Yes, Im still annoyed about that lol.

Oh, and keep your right foot down for as long as possible. As for all that folding mirrors crap, and taping up panel gaps.....not my scene.
Although my passenger mirror does fold back a little around 150 anyway

Well dependant on speeds achieved I will probably have to use 6th as 5th on the VXR8 pretty much tops out around 155 (even with the speed limiter disabled!) 6th feels much more useable than on my old VXR monaro so should be okay. Looking forward to the day!

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. If you shift to 6th at circa-150 you'll be a touch below 4K revs. You'll be 30% down on your max power figure and just after peak torque. Might be worth taking the spoiler off again.

Great news, It will be good for you to put the new beast down the strip and compare it to your old one. Also interesting to get some real world performance comparisons between Modded and standard VXR8.

See you Sunday.........tank

Good luck on Sunday guys, I wont be getting there. The Monaro needs a new set of spark plug leads (extra special onesbanghead) that didnt get here on time. Heat had split a bunch of the last ones giving a missfire....
