Discussion
As luck would have it with all the recent discussions re cam upgrades for the VXR8 this months (November issue!!) GM Hi Tech Performance mag has an excellent article comparing a number of cams for the ls3 engine. All tests done on an engine dyno and good range of flywheel power figures achieved up to 550fwhp, even some of the more road friendly cams were pushing out 530ish. Anyone wants a copy of the article let me know. Lot in it to back up ringrams arguments for cam as a cheap option instead of a charger.
If I read the fish site correctly a cam only install is under £2k
Im guessing if you supply the cam it would be even less. Thats not too bad if it includes gaskets, valve springs etc.
How about scanning the article in and providing a pdf link or similar? Or a presis of the results, specs, max tq/bhp and rpm etc?
I just came back from the US and didnt see the latest one. Only September was in Barnes and Noble.. But I got a copy of engine masters which is available only over the counter. Good info on piston rings and cams too.
Like a small 214 cam almost outperforming a 232 cam just due to running proper lift! These days with an LSx engine if you arnt running close to or over 0.6xx lift you arnt running a proper cam.

Still waiting for someone to actually print how much it would cost to do a cam upgrade......asked in several threads many times now.
Hi Mark,A cam kit including new springs would cost you about £450-£500 if you sourced it over here. I got mine from Knight Racing Engines at Daventry.
You may then need a set of longer push rods depending on the new base circle of the cam, about £90 again from Pete Knight. A good addition as they would be stronger and chrome moly.
You will definitely need a re-map, allow between £350 and £750 depending on who you go to, or if it's a known quantity you can buy an off the shelf tune and have it flashed in, this would cost about £300-£400 including a license and a logging run.
Bits and pieces could include maybe a front timing cover gasket, although mine was fine for re-use, you will definitely need a new crank pulley bolt circa £10 as the stock item is torque to yield and can not be re-used.
Labour, I reckon should take about a day or so if everything goes to plan and there are no issues, so whatever the going rate per hour. £500-£700 ???
This is all IMHO only based on what I've done myself. The only way you will really know is to get a quote from the usual suspects.
If anyone want a nice new Powerbond 10% underdrive front pully suitable for a VXR8 (I think), I believe I have one. This fits the corvette style pulley setup NOT the VZ and back Monaro LS1 and LS2. First one with £120 to me gets it. You will need different size belts.

Love to have a read of that article!!! The cam I'm getting is .624 .624 The AFRs I have will take up to .650!Im guessing if you supply the cam it would be even less. Thats not too bad if it includes gaskets, valve springs etc.

Im pretty sure its what I have for a pulley, the stock belt works ok, but you will need a smaller AC one.
That's why I couldn't use yours on mine or I'd have had yours. after_shock said:
Prices ive been quoted for the cam upgrade including a re-map range between £1800 and £2200, thats all in with all the bits.
That sounds about right then, depending on what "all the bits" means.Shame you're not mechanically minded as it was not too bad a job to do, except for the bruised knuckles. You do need a mate to hold up the air con condenser up as you slot the cam in, although I even managed that on my own.
Very gratifying when you do something yourself and see the results.
