Sorry but its time for a dumb newbie question.

I have my Monaro (06 CV8) in for its first MOT on Thursday and the only thing I am worried about is the Handbrake - it has far too much travel (about 8-10 notches to engage fully).

Is it an easy job to adjust the handbrake? Is it adjusted at the yoke end of the lever mechanism or do the rear shoes have manual adjuster on them?

Anyone had a go at doing this? All advice gratefully appreciated bow

Yeah it's an easy job slide the drivers seat back and lift the guator on the handbrake you need a 10mm long series socket or anopen ended spannner to adjust

If you still have trouble after you have adjusted the cable, there are adjusters in the drums. I think you can adjust them without removing the drum but I took them off.

Thanks guys - really useful answers and nice to know that it can be adjusted from within the car....how sensible! I love this Forum, I have all the info I need within about 3 hours of posting my question - which is fantastic.

Apologies re not finding the answer in the old thread, the search came up with nothing.

Regarding the technical service manual, is there anything available in the UK (or available to the UK) covering our cars? The diagrams for the handbrake adjustment procedure seem to be written by someone with a good grasp of english and an understanding of the car - unlike most Haynes manuals! I am assuming that they came from the Holden service manual??

Just done mine in about three minutes flat...the longest part was finding the 10mm spanner!

Mine used to to come right the way up and still not hold it, a couple of turns on the nylock bolt and its perfect again.

Should have done its months ago!

On a different note, is it possible for a nylock to wear out and undo over time, as I have had to adjust the hand brake several times in my ownership of 21/2 years.....?

Mine's all sorted now too - and passed the MOT yesterday with no mention of dodgy handbrake adjustment (unlike my Manta!).

From experience, Nyloks can wear out over time if they are regularly turned but I think the problem with handbrake adjustment is more often than not down to the steel cables stretching over time.

At least after reading some of the other threads, I can understand why the parking brake on the 'Ro works better when facing down hill than when trying to do a hillstart. I wish I had known this before I took the car up to the lake district on holiday! Doh!

Hi,
The handbrake adjustment is in two parts, as per the link above. I was taught that you adjust the handbrake first, then you adjust the handbrake lever.

The handbook that came with my car was Max Ellery's vehicle repair manual, EP.C107, Commodore, 1997 - 2004, which covers the Monaro. Much better than Haynes.
