I would think this topic has come up a thousand times before, but I can't find anything substantial in my searches.

I need to have a new set of tyres the ones on there are Potenzas 235x40x18 front and back, I would probably think that these have been on the car from new, but unsure on that one, front and backs seem to have the same wear rate, I would have thought the rears would only last half the life time of the fronts, so may be the rears have been changed before, car has done 24k

I have been looking on the net at tyre reviews and costs, I have wiped myself out of most of my cash buying the car, so very expensive tyres are not on the list, A Toyo T1R do seem to read up quite well and are around £130 I did see on the forum someone had a blow out with a Toyo on, but it looked to me it had been damaged and not just blown out.

Any input on the tyre question would be great, want to get them done this week.

Yeah 245's fit nice. But 235's would be cheaper..

I bought some NS2's for mine when I was on a shoe string. Still am in a way, anyway, they worked fine. mytyres linked to some tire review site which rated them right up there with the communist block of western europes unionised pension subsidised tires from Michelin, Pirelli etc. But who knows..

Check out ebay for tyres. I have bought 3 different pairs of tyres and no problems and getting wheelcarrier.co.uk to collect and deliver where necessary. There is a pair of 6mm tread second hand Bridgestones on there now in 235's.
wheelcarriers price is £9.99 +VAT for the pair uk mainland to uk mainland.

To avoid the usual misundertandings, standard sizes are 235/40/18 on CV8, 245/35/19 on VXR.

Just been out on this dismal windy night and measured the tread depth, 3.6 mm fronts and 4.1mm rears, this is not measured from the wear bars this is tread depth in the middle of the tyres

Do you think they have many more miles left?

Or do I fit new tyres now and put these on ebay for burn out tyres? may get some money back to cover costs on new ones.

Depends how you look at the tyres, 4.1mm is roughly half left, 3.6 is obviously a bit less so probably a reasonable amount of miles left in them yet, depending on how you drive.

but dont forget....tread depth is all important in winter when the roads are soaked etc.

mmmm thanks for the input stevie and aftershock.

You could be right saying they have a little bit more life left in them, another thing to consider is my wheels have a few scrapes on them, should I wait and get the tryes changed and wheels refurbed at the same time in the new year, I think when the weather is bad and wet I will be using my other car, so dont have to worry about using the car in crap weather.

Do you think 3/4 worn tyres are still safe at high speed, probably not over 120mph?

mmmmmm they are very good on prices, so can you buy the tryes from them and have them fitted free and balanced free at one of their tyre fitting places?

Depends on weather conditions.

I was using almost bald drag radials at 15psi recently on a damp track, crossing the line at only 130mph still lighting the tyres.

Which aspect isnt safe about that ?

All of the above smile

What I want to know Stevie is what angle to the track was the car travelling at the time? 20 degrees?

There was a guy on here who said he could do 19" Dunlop Sportmaxx for £138 +VAT. That is a good price for a good all round tyre. I've given mine an absolute caning on the track and they hold up well. Not quite the same grip as P zeros' but a safe alternative to the stty asian stuff. They're made either Germany or Japan.

Tread depth on the rear boot has reduced by 1.5mm in approx. 3k miles, on the front 1.6mm in 4k miles, this gives a theoretical life of about 13k for the rear and 16k for the front. I'm on the Bridgestone RE040 18s and I can't say I'm impressed by their longevity (original rears had to be replaced at 8.5k).

If looking at P-zero's try the Nero's as opposed to the Rosso's found them a bit better grip wise, not sure on life yet tho.

Put Michelin Pilot sports on the back a couple of weeks back and they are in a different class again, absolutely fantastic grip.
