Following on from my visit to Vauxhalls's for an MOT and for them to have a look at my brakes under warranty, they have agreed to skim the dics free of charge, the problem is I'm not very happy about A) getting the disc skimmed and B) letting Vauxhall do it. I'm only getting slight brake judder scrubbing off high speed (not too high mind you!) or heavy braking. It's booked in to the Fish on the 23rd Nov for Service and to have a set of full performance brake pads fitted.

Question is, do I get the Disc's done? I know it will be free but is it necessary?? Vauxhalls are saying the offer will only be valid for 30 days !

I'd get them done under warranty and then wait for the fish to check them over. They may say they are not done to an acceptable standard. If this is the case then pay the fish to do them. If however the job done by VX is good its cost you nothing. You cant really loose

Whilst the judder may clean up with the PF pads, it better for them to be skimmed first. We can do that, but not normally on the same day. Be interesting to know how they will skim them?

Have spoken to the service manager today, they skim the dics on the car, is this what you meant or the way the disc face is skimmed?

Just curious to know if it was on or off car?

On the car is better because it takes account of any variance on the mating face of the hub. I reckon it can't do any harm.

Would not of let them skim them off the car, that's why I made sure it was a discs on skim

Never heard of a garage capable of doing this.

I was thinking of having a pair from a Mondeo skimmed a while ago, but the cost was the same as new discs from my friendly brake factor.

Nor had I too be honest but he assured me it's all done at the garage, which is Underwoods of Colchester by the way.

Agreed, in theroy it must be more accurate. It does however appear to be more operator sensitive.

Lots of garages can do it. It's a service option on Honda's, for example, so presumeably all Honda dealers must have the machines. I was in my little village garage the other day and the owner was proudly showing me his new disc skimming machine that he'd bought on eBay.

I did wonder with the price of discs vs the time it must take to set the machine up whether it really makes sense?

For the Vauxhall retail price of the (rubbish) Monaro discs you can probably buy a skimming machine...!!

Had mine done under warranty a couple of years back.

Started as an offer to skim the fronts, ended up with four new discs and pads all round. Probably worth taking them up on the offer and see how you go.

i had the brake judder when i bought mine (with 9,000 miles on it) 6litre vxr

went to one utterly useless vauxhall dealer who will remain nameless who said they needed skimming and it would be done under warranty (but if that didn't fix it then they weren't sure what would happen) but i'd be without the car for a few days. based on the crap service i got from them in other areas I declinded and a few months later brought the issue up with picadors and lo and behold i had new discs and new pads all round done under warrnanty (well the pads i paid for but the £2000 they wanted for discs + the labour i didn't pay)

that being said when i sold the car recently the judder was starting to come back again at certain speeds.

When I got my 6.0VXR in July it had a judder. Was told by the supplying dealer that the front discs had already been skimmed. Cant get new discs under Network Q,because they say it was a fault that the dealer knew about. Dealer is 200+ miles away so local dealer is trying to act as go-between. Suppling dealer is only offering to pay for the discs to be skimmed again[on the car].
