My oil temprature gauge went to the roof whilst out and about today. I was driving normally, not pushing it at all, and noticed that the temprature gauge had gone up to 5. I've had no engine warning light or anything, the engine temprature gauge is at the normal temprature and the car drives fine. I don't think it's a faulty gauge as when I put the electrics on it does it's normal check and there is also enough oil in the engine.

What causes this? Should I be worried?

Do you mean temp or pressure. The early R8's oil pressure gauge goes to 5, is this what you mean?

Sorry, on my 05 VXR, the temp gauge on the centre console on the right?

Monaro only has a pressure gauge. No temp gauge fitted. Is it at 5 all the time? Even with the engine switched off? Or only when its running?

Before today, it was always at 3........but today I noticed it was 5. When the engine's off it returns back to 0.

Probably a sticking (shut) oil pressure relief vavle. Keep an eye on it. If it continues to do it, it really needs a new oil pump. On the upside when the valve sticks open you get no oil pressure!!!

I have had the same thing and so have others. Turned out to be the oil pressure sender which seems to read +5 volts when it's knackered.

This occurs too, but it would do this with the ignition on but without the engine running, hence my clarification about whether the engine needed to be running in order to see 5 bar.

Yeah, it only does it when the engine is running. When the electrics are on it does it's check where it slowly goes to 3. And when the engine is off it just stays at the bottom.

So does this mean no 'hooning' until I get it checked out?

And how much does a oil pump cost these days?

Your statement is a contradiction in its own right!

Lets get this right, with the ignition ON, and the engine OFF, it rises to 3 bar? Yes? Then the oil pressure switch is defective. The gauge under no circumstance can read anything other than zero with the engine OFF unless it is defective.

Which is why the last bit of your statement makes no sense?

Sounds exactly the same problem I had. New oil pressure sensor sorted it.

It does it when I put the electrics on? It looks like a self test it does as the battery voltage one does teh same thing at teh same time, goes to about halfway?

If it goes to about 3 (or just below in my case) and then when you start it up it goes up to 5, thats the same as what mine was doing.

Changed the sensor and all is well, it was about £70 for the sensor (got mine from Monkfish).

The other things I was going to try after that was oil filter, then the oil pump. But sensor was the first port of call, after what others had said it could be and it was the easiest to change.

Sounds like a sensor then. Easy to prove, just inplug it then turn on ignition. If it reads zero now then switch is defective.

Brilliant, um..................i'm not the most technically minded person so where is it and what do I need to remove it?

Its at the back of the engine behind the inlet manifold, round plug. You will need to release the clip holding it on.

I gather that the sensor is the yellow socket on the right side of the engine? (as you're looking at it?) If it is then I can't get access to it without a ramp. If it is the sensor that is playing up (which it really looks like it is as it has all the syptoms of the other post) what harm would it be doing to the engine other than an incorrect readout?

Mmmm, yellow socket? Not sure i know what you mean. Knock sensor maybe? No ramp required for oil pressure switch. Its on the top of the valley plate at the back of the manifold. Plug is black and purple. If its only a sensor fault then no damage will occur. IF!
