I've found plenty of posts mentioning this problem, but none identifying the actual problem or cure.

Does anyone have the definitive solution for the rear footwells in a Monaro?

Most likely the door seals on the front doors - ie the membrane behind the door cover with the handle etc. Common issue.

Just take the door trims off and seal the membrane properly, use some common sense when doing this as there are a few areas where you can seal the membrane to the metal only to form a small trough where water can gather and then find its way inside again, the speaker pod areas are like this from memory.

There is no where in the back where water can get in really, the rear glass is bolted all around the edge (behind the trim) and is very unlikely to leak and the wheel arch would have to be damaged to allow water in.

I sussed mine yesterday. The water was coming in to the front passenger footwell through the conical rubber grommet used for the indicator repeater wire, and because the rear footwells are lower than the fronts the water collects there. I fixed it by retaping the grommet to the wire and also with a splodge of silicon sealant inside the grommet. I also angled the wire to run uphill in the wheel arch to encourage the water to run off of the grommet.

Any one else wanting to check for leaks here can just remove the kick panel rather than the passenger seat, rear seat squab and most of the interior trim like I did rolleyes Although it did help to get everything dried out.
