I think this may have been covered before but I cannot find the thread.

Devon & Cornwall plod announced a new crack-down on noisy exhausts yesterday and as I am down here all week trundling around I wondered exactly where I stood if pulled over?

My 500 is fitted with a Wortec Cat-Back and would wake up the dead so not a good position if plod decided to get funny about it!

Not sure what law they are claiming is being broken?

It doesn't look aftermarket though does it ? Just claim it is standard and that the garage sold it to you like that.

84dB is the legal noise limit under Construction & Use regs, and ignorance is not a defense.

http://www.uk-legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1996/Uk...

Expect a fixed penalty fine, maybe 3 points (CU60) and/or a rectification notice.

You've got to be caught first, and most cars will not attract attention on a light throttle.

You can drive these cars fairly sedately without going about 2000 rpm, even 1500 rpm if you're careful so I can't imagine you would set anything off. I always keep a light foot in the presence of plod, and switch to quite mode if they are behind me. I imagine the noise checks will be in towns too.

Something worth mentioning though, this has been brought up a few times in the speed, plod and the law section on Piston Heads and a lot of people (and I mean a lot) think they are dicey terms to prosecute you other than handing out some arbitrary fine.

That may well be me, after the intake headers and cats, thought it would be a laugh to pop down to Goodwood for a noise test,
At 4500 rpm the marshall was jumping about laughing ,saying you will never get that on track nipper after the throttle off, the metre read 119 at its peak.
Now I will have to go buy something else for my track days, like I need an excuse hehehe.
98db on a track day, what good is that.
Just as an aside it was my goal in life to exit the chicane at Goodwood with my side exit exhausts spitting flames just like the v8 supercars on the telly ,oh well

Ignorance ??? I'd doubt even a solicitor could understand that bullst. Whoever wrote it needs some lead between their ears.

And for all the crap thats written, nowhere is a test procedure specified.

I wouldn't worry too much about the C&U regs. They introduced S59 for this kind of thing as it saves them having to spend money on accurate measurement and all that stuff.

I keep meaning to get mine noise tested just to see for a laugh too smile Did anyone notice that iPhone app they had on Top Gear this week that was measuring noise? I imagine it's not very accurate, and less so with lots of noise, but I was wondering if anyone had tried it?

Section 59. This covers it fairly well - http://www.glass-uk.org/index.php?option=com_conte...

It's like an ASBO for cars and drivers. Mostly used against the yoof element, but not exclusively.

Mine was 98db at thunder road stationary and I kept it at 2k rpm so goodness knows what it is higher up especially after having the manifolds done
