Too Much Oil...

Was filling up the oil at the weekend and was just wondering what happens if too much oil is put in? (i.e. the dip stick reads above the 'max' mark) - are there any serious consequences?

I didn't overfill mine, but it was above the half way point when screwed down - but got me thinking all the same.

Earlier post on here states one of the dangers as getting oil into your airbox, soaking ur filter and causing some oil burning as it gets dragged into the engine...

It can kipper the engine big time if you put a lot extra in. IIRC there was a thread on here some time ago about a non UK car that was well over filled.
