Changing the diff in the Sag to a 3.73 version..do I need to remove the rear mounting bracket by loosen the 4 allen bolts that hold the bracket to the rear diff cover.. or can the diff be removed with bracket still attached..

Morning Lindsey

Have a look on Graham Varleys site http://www.varleyhyd.com/FJ062.asp#Gearbox & Differential

I think you may have to but haven't had the pleasure of doing it myself. The only thing I've done on the diff is replaced the oil and checked the bushes

Thanks Buzz.. actually have Graham's book..it doesn't say.

The photo of the diff on page 418 shows the mount removed..maybe the mount was removed once the diff was released from the rear bush and moved forward some inches.

hi Linz, I`d imagine its the same proceedure as with the griff diff, remove propshaft, drive shafts ect, support with jack, then remove front bush bolts and mounting plates, then rear bolt and lower, probably needing to lift the diff so that it comes out prop flange first, with the drive flanges facing fore and aft, as the chassis isn`t wide enough to just lower it onto the ground.

have it on ramps if poss, and someone with muscles to give a hand, its a heavy bit of kit that you don`t want falling on your toes.

Thanks Clive,

I have loosened all nuts/bolts except the rear mount brackets.. so I'll try to lower and twist the diff away from the chassis.. and if need be crack the 4 bolts holding the rear bracket in place..

If I don't make it to Chatsworth you'll know the diff has fallen and pinned me under the car!!!

For those following this.. you can remove the diff without taken off the rear mounting bracket..

If anything like a Cerb you can drop the diff with the rear bracket still on. However for the sake of 4 bolts i would remove them to give you more room to play with as i found out last week.
