I'm just trying to sort out some new tyres for the sag found the tyres i like in the right size but i can save a massive £300.00+ vat if i have a W rated (168mph) tyre rather than y rated (185mph)

would they be up yto it??

what does everybody else use?

Cheers Rob

the speed rating of the tyre relates to its contruction, so as long as you're driving at normal speeds, you won't be any the wiser. I guess if if you plan on sitting on the autobahn at Vmax for long periods, then you'd beter get the Y-rated ones. If not, then save you're money.

ER no, it is also the tyre's ability to handle the other performance stresses. Acceleration, cornering etc. I am sure the insurers will be happy to refuse a payout for sub-standard tyres. Not worth it IMO.

I can't see why the price difference is so great though? Decent tyres are around £150 a corner.

I run Toyo R1R's which are W rated without any problems. They are I feel a quality tyre and as I won't be sat at 160mph+ am more than happy!

Cheers. Lee.

Targarama I can understand where you are coming from but from an insurance point of view so long as tyres are constructed to pass an MOT then with our speed limit of 70mph they can be used on any vehicle. Asked the question of insurance companys when looking for winter tyres for the Sag and at renewal stage and received the same answer from all them, happy to use a lower speed rated tyre during the winter as I am not going to be stressing any of their limits but like you think I would prefer to have recommended ones during the more enjoyable driving months.IMHO obviously.

R1Rs look like a good summer tyres, but I am concerned about winter use given this Toyo technical note.

True; the stronger construction of the tyre will allow it to resist heat build-up, so in theory it will do other things better too. Given however that TVR's are comparativly light cars however, the stresses they have to endure will still be less than most cars. I seriously think its not worth getting hung up over (all IMHO).

yikes Wot??? Where do we find the discount code? First I've heard of this Clive. As a TVRCC member will I still get a discount for my Brera 19" tyres from Camskills?

go to the tvrcc home page, click on "benefits" in the left hand column to find a whole list of people giving discounts to club members.

I arranged the discount scheme with Camskill's it only covers R1R & 888's (unless it's changed)

Please don't post the discount details or we'll loose it.

Flying Bannana I know the R1Rs get positive feedback but having seen the Toyo warning put up by Sevenman I hope you are very carefull in the colder weather.

The Toyo warning is not new and common sense would saw don't use in winter normal summer tyres are bad enough

Agreed Barry normal summer tyres are bad enough in winter but the majority of people still only use one set throughout the year

The warning was for r888 as well as the r1r tyres, I've run the r888 for many years and had no problems, the car only comes out on nice days
