re; Thinking of changing 996 c2 911 for a T350....
Discussion
So, to be honest i wasnt really sure where to post this, so i thought i would try both marque specific forums.
I have 2002 Seal Grey manual c2 with M030 suspension, sports exhaust, sports seats etc etc. I enjoy the car, had it just over a year. Its my only car however i am central London based so commute on the tube, by foot, or bicycle. Its a weekend away kind of car really. Last year i did 5k miles.
Am i mad to start looking at these? Anyone here made similar swaps?
I love Porsche, always have done, and love my car, but fancy something a bit more 'special' feeling and dont really fancy having £35k tied up in a 996 gt3 at the moment.
A sorted t350 with a rebuilt warrantied engine looks like cracking value to me, or have I lost grasp of my senses!
Thanks in advance guys and girls

Take one for a drive, you will either fall in love or wonder what all the fuss is about.
IMHO you only live once. Give one a home if you like the drive. You can always get back into pork in the future if it doesn't work out.
P.S. There is a lot of dross out there (drab interiors, unkempt small niggles which may not stop the car working but will annoy you). Don't be disappointed if you come across these examples, there are gems out there too.

I'm another ex-Porsche owner. My mates (and ex-girlfriend) currently have 997's of various descriptions, and a couple more have Vantages.
So I've driven and riden in these quite a bit, and helped with the purchase process etc...
Firstly, I must admit this will be a biased post, becasue I can't stand 996s. I wasn't that keen when they came out and they have aged worse than pretty much any ofther 911.
So given that you want to change it, but don't want to spend GT3 money I presume you're contemplating the other cars mentioned above.
As another poster said, these are very different beasts to Porsches. The 997 is such a well built, well mannered car that you now see them driven by women 50% of the time. That in itself isn't a bad thing, but I just wanted a car that was a bit more of a handful...
On the practicality side of things, they are not at all as much trouble as you would imagine. I bought one privately, that was about £10k less than I would have paid for a rebuilt and warrantied one, so I knew I'd have a couple of grand's worth (well, £3k) of bits to sort which I now have done - but this includes a major service, 5 (yes, 5!) new tyres, sports exhaust, steering wheel (nothing wrong with the old one) and a proper built in sat-nav/phone kit installation.
Its now running beautifully and is exactly the way I want it (ha! well, almost).
Briefly mentioning your purchase criterior, rebuilt ones are worth considerably more, but the original ones with higher miles should be just as reliable. The consensus seems to be that they either blow up within 10-15,000 miles, or they are OK. TVR's get better with more miles as the dodgy bits get replaced! Also, don't buy one because of colour - interior or exterior as this is so easy to change.
You'll buy a TVR if you're the sort of person who gets a kick out of looking away from the mainstream way of thinking.
Pedestrians will all turn to look - and smile, young children will clamber over it and ask to sit in it, people will ask you to leave it running a bit longer in car parks, old and frial neighbours will ask you if you can start it more quietly in the morning, and I've even had a pedestrian taking a photo of me (well, the car) as I was picking a girl up for a date from outside Bond St station the other day.
Driving the car is an event to enjoy every time you get in it that simply can't be compared to a Porsche or even an Aston.
Anyway, I'm in SW London, near Richmond tube, if you want to go for a spin in one and have a proper natter about it then send me a quick email. Should be no problem.

Great value, specially if it has a warranty still on it. Dont regret getting a TVR over a 911. Still makes me grin and only looking better with age. Dont think you can ever get bored of the noises it makes, For a weekend toy I cant fault it. Still as special if not more so 3years later and prices are stable or on the up which is a great feeling. If its going to be parked on the street and seldom used then I would be inclined to think you have the right car already.
It will be used at weekends and occasionally during the week, as i think i said, i covered 5k miles last year, more than most speed 6 engined cars judging from the classifieds, but i take your point, as with most cars in my view, fairly regular if only light use does help them. The car will be garaged.

I think if you can garage it it doesn't matter about mileage. The car will be garaged.
I suggest you drive one and just see if it's more fun than the Porker.
I loved mine, it was a great driving car. Genuinely thrilling and yet extremely chilled on longer drives.

i am just down the road next to Richmond Park! Must admit i never see any other 350's never mind to many TVR's
Me and a few other Moded Tiv's go out on some spirited Morning drives over the summer if your interested?
What engine is in yours?
I have had quite a number of 911's from humble 930's through to three 911 RS's (964, 993 and 997). One of them was a 996C4S which was my most disappointing 911.
I love Porsches and I love TVR's, to me it is all down to if you "get" TVR's or not. It is nothing like your 996 which to me is far more a everyday car - some will argue against this but it is just my humble opinion.
If you can go and meet Christian and his 350 that would be a great idea.

How funny - I drive through Richmond most days, I'm surprised we haven't bumped into each other. I've been trying to get my mate to take his Vantage out for a spin like that for ages, but he's too scared of trying to keep up! Mine is just a standard 3.6. At the moment...

I am going to try and make it to Snetterton on Saturday to see you and the Gruesome twosome make some racing history!! Was joking with Warren about coming out of retirement
The LS is just blowing me away at the moment[and pretty much everything else] although i might change to Omex like you run on the Sag!
What made you choose the Omex over the FBW GM set up?

I'll keep my eye out for you! I'm in a laser blue 350 which you will hear before you see! or a yellow griff which is pretty hard to miss!Mine is just a standard 3.6. At the moment...
I'll pm you next time we are out! In fact there is a few of us heading over to Sunday service this coming Sunday for the chorus of noise!
Thank you - I am going to try not to cause so much damage to the suspension this time around, we are pretty chuffed with our championship position though especially as we do not really know the car yet.
Omex at the time was really the only way to go but I am of course pleased we went that route.
