Whilst under my Tamora I have noticed quite a few bits of rust on the chassis. It's just surface rust but needs sorting. I noticed the thread on the correct colour paint to use but what is the best preparation? I am guessing wire brush, rust eater zinc, paint? Thanks

There's a cheap Dremel like kit in Costco right now. Grind down to bare metal, clean area with Marine Clean, then brush on Metal Ready to score the bare metal. POR15 chassis grey to coat and prevent rust. Then paint with appropriately matched chassis paint. The above aren't cheap, but they are brilliant products, especially the Marine Clean which will cut through any grease and waxoyl in next to no time. Available from http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/por15-pain...

I used the KBS kit.. which went on really well and seems to be rock solid. Was created by the original people who made Por15, but has been made easier to handle.

Thanks for the help chaps. I have ordered the matched paint as reccommended in another thread so will treat as you suggest. Maybe going for the easier to handle product. It will give me plenty to do when she is back from TVR Power apart from driving around with a massive grin on my face that is. driving

Another alternative is 121 Epoxy Mastic, which has been well rated in some classic magazine tests. Easy to apply over wire brushed steel and in grey is actually a pretty good match for my chassis powder coat.

wot he said...im probably going down this route. My powder coat is farily well stuck in places, its just getting patchy. Apparently POR isnt very tolerant of surfaces that arent rusty and pitted, particularly covered in smooth powdercoat. Epoxy is far more tolerant and as said, has come top of the tests in classic car mag testing for corrosion resistance.

Having just done some on my chassis around the wishbone mounting points, I was surprised how far the rust had crept under what looked (and felt as it was being removed) like sound powder coat. I can see why it lifts in sheets on the brackets etc now.

I have just been doing some research on the 121 stuff and it does look very good with less prep required for the same result so it's seems like a good option. Thanks again for the tips.

Yes grey. It's a pretty good match for my '00 Tuscan chassis.

Got my self a 1 Ltr (£39) just a bit to touch up, I hate rust I also run a L reg Corsa GSI wish I had looked more in to things like this ten years ago. I know a lot of owners do not like wax oil type stuff but it has helped a lot on my other car, I was thinking of getting some clear and letting it down with white spirit and just doing the out riggers? any thoughts????

I have just ordered the same and a wire brush so when my car comes back I can sort all the rusty bits. I may use some wax oil to get to the parts a brush cant reach.

Me too with the wax oil, the lads at the specialist TVR place were not keen on me using the old Wax Oil stuff but still running a 18 year old corsa GSi it dose work! going to use white spirit with the wax oil to thin it out so its a very light coat post getting her on a ramp and addressing and chassis rust spots with wire wheel on a drill some paint safe chemical rust remover and my new super paint.
