Hi All,

I'm hoping somebody might be able to provide some advice. I've been in the market for a T350C for a number of years but residing in New Zealand makes it very difficult to get my hands on one.

Luckily i'm visiting Manchester now until the 25th June and i intend to buy one and ship it back with me. I thought i'd covered all aspects of this purchase but one problem i seem to be having now is finding temporary insurance while I have it here because I intend to drive it down to Southampton myself.

FYI this is the car i've got my eyes on and going to view next week;

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3844097.htm

The insurance quotes i'm requesting are coming up in excess of 800 pounds for a month of cover...

Please help.

I got my insurance for my T350C through Henderson Taylor and they were waaaaaaaaay cheaper than anyone else I spoke to. Definitely worth a call.

I ran into similar problems. I am am Dutch and had to import the car to the Netherlands. Getting the part from the dealer to the boat insured was a big hassle.

In the end I came to an arrangement with the dealer that one of their employees drove the car to the boat with me in it so ti was on their insurance, and I would take it from there. That worked out well for everybody, but I see the distance you have to cover to your boat is a lot bigger than the 1,5 hour drive it was for me.

Have you tried Aviva short term insurance?

One way around this may be to convince the owner to insure you as an additional driver under his/her policy and not exchange until you get to the export terminal in Southampton. Presumably your shipping insurance will cover you from the time that you deliver the car to them?

Incidentally, how much to ship the car to NZ?

I am truly envious that you'll have a TVR in the country with the best driving roads in the world. Pity about the speed limit and the enforcement approach, though!

Try Competition Car Insurance (CCI). I don't know if they can do what you want, but they are always very helpful with me and they specialise in sports car insurance.

Hi,

The quote I have which is in excess of 800 pounds for the month is with Aviva short-term car insurance in my name (i'm 30 on June the 20th) based in Manchester. They seem to be the only ones with the ability to meet my needs. I haven't phoned around any of the specialist insurance companies yet (only the main-stream ones). S I will be doing this tomorrow and speaking to the shipping agents to see what services they can offer.

My options are;

1. Insure it under my dads name and have me as a named driver but not sure if this will work when I come to ship the car in my name because my dad might need to take ownership of it and I think the shippers will need proof that I own it.
2. Have it trailer transported down to Southampton once purchased because yes the shipping costs cover insurance on the vehicle once it's in the port.
3. Just bite the bullet and pay the 800 quid short term insurance if it's cheaper than option 2 plus I wouldn't mind getting a little feel for T350 ownership whilst i'm here in Manchester on faster roads until my final day which is the 25th June, Aviva have already stated that once I leave and cancel the insurance policy I will get a refund minus 15 pounds (admin fee, 50 pounds cancellation fee and a percentage fee based on how many days are outstanding on the cover).

The shipping to NZ is about $4000 NZD which at the current exchange rate is about 2000 pounds, it's going via a 20' shipping container so I have room for spare parts. (i'll be posting a message on the NZ forum shortly for any TVR CC members wanting parts to ship so that I can share the shipping cost).

Cheers

P.S. yes the speed limits are too slow in NZ and ere are way too many Police patrol cars on the road especially around Auckland but I won't be driving daft.

We've just shipped a T350C to Japan. Recommend you print out instructions and stick them to the inside of the windscreen on how to open the doors and also not to park the passenger side tight to the container wall, so that you can get access to the Anderson jack when it lands. You'll also probably need an Anderson jnump lead set at the other end.

Great advice. As for the in-UK insurance, can the dealer supplying the car help you out (or even deliver the car to the shipping terminal?)

That's great advice thanks!

The sale includes an Anderson jump lead.

It's a private sale. I've got a lot of phoning around today in order to try and get that initial quote with Aviva drastically reduced. If this is not possible given my circumstances (age, location, situation) then i'll look at getting it delivered to the port via a TVR car dealer.

Would the seller drive it for you for the petrol + return train/air fare?

I'm not sure, I'll ask him when I go to view the car.

Haha - It was lucky when I arrived on Saturday, the weather was amazing... Now it's gone back to typical overcast rainy Manchester - so not so lucky.

Thanks... It seems everyone has been more than helpful so far (the seller, the shipping agents both UK and NZ, Jim Gamsby) except the insurance companies...

A lot of my friends have said that insurance premiums have sky-rocketed in the last 5 years since i've been away.

Hi, thanks, they were the first insurance I tried and although they seemed helpful, they couldn't offer short term car insurance for me now being a non-UK resident.

I may be over simplifying, but whenever I've had an insurance policy that I've had to cancel (eg buying a new car half way through the policy etc) I've always been refunded pro-rata.
Can't you buy a normal policy, then cancel it a couple of days in?

In fact, you have a 14 day cooling off period anyway...
You'd only pay for 2 or 3 days of a normal policy of £500 or so...

By the way, you're going to have so much fun.
Congrats on the purchase!
